MIDWAY GRADED SCDOOL. t

Hemingway, May 10:?An enthusiastic
climax to * the greatest and
most successful school year within
the history of Midway's graded
school system was the exercises of
the grades held last night in the
school building. A large stand was
erected in the open air and beautifully
decorated with roses,ferns and
evergreens, upon which stand the
exercises were conducted.

Special vocal and instrumental
music was secured for the occasion.
The songs, which reflected much
credit on the pupils, were sung by
the school, assisted at the organ by
Miss Ruth Wilson of Indiantown.
In the absence of Mr J G McCullough,
Superintendent of Education
for Williamsburg county, Mr SJ
Wall, Superintendent of Education
for Marion county, delivered the address
of the evening, choosing for
his subject. "Phases of the Educai
tional Life". Prof Wall in a strong
and pleasing manner ably presented
the phases of the educational life,
making a plea for the education of
the hand9 as well as the mind, an
education of the heart as well as
the hands,an education of those faculties
which will be of use in furnishing
legitimate pleasure. He
stressed and earnestly urged the patrons
and board of trustees to continue
their education in nstitutions i
of higher learning.
The school during the past year
has been under the management of
Mrs Lulu C Kennedy, principal, and
Miss Eulice Cox. assistant, who,with
the co-operation of a most honorable
board of trustees, Messrs E T Gaskins,
J T Eaddy and W E Tanner,
have made great improvements in
the school. A teacher's desk, chair,
108 feet of new hyloplate blackboard,
a new library case and 65
volumes have been installed. The
old open well, which was a death pit
for the most fatal disease germs,has
been abandoned and is replaced by m
flow of pure water. The school is
carrying a special levy, and an elec*?

tion is ordered ana me doous contracted
to be sold in the near future
to erect a large and adequate building
on an improved modern plan by
the next term. A piano is also to be
purchased for the school. It is the
policy of the school to build up a.
complete system from the first grade
through the high school, leading upto
college. Mrs Kennedy is well
known in Williamsburg county
through her educational and social
work as v. woman of the highest
character and ability, characterized
by her gentleness, sweetness and
genuine love for children. For several
years she has taught in Williamsburg
county, in which throughher
personal efforts she assisted
largely in building up from a very
small beginning several schools to
their present attractive proportions
and standards. Mrs Kennedy has an
admirable reputation in school work;
19he is considered not onlv a verv
strong and progressive teacher, but
also one who inspires and stimulates
her pupils. She is a graduate and
has done post-graduate work in New
York.
Miss Cox is a young graduate of
Johnsonville, who came to us highly
recommended as a kind and faithful
fpanhpr in nrimsrv orrfldps. She
has done good work during the past
