WAREHOUSE BURNED
AT LAKE CITY.
SUPPOSED TO BE INCENDIARYREVIVAL
MEETING?PO LITCAL
AND PERSONAL.
Lake City, May 2:?This morning
about 1 o'clock the Star Tobacco
warehouse was wholly destroyed by
fire. Before an alarm was given
the flames had gained such headway
that nothing could be done to save
that building and it was only by
.iard work that nearby dwellings
and other structures were prevented
from going the way of the warehouse.
To such an extent had the
fire spread that persons asleep in
dwellings several hundred feet away
were awakened by the roar of the
flames before the pistol shots, which
seems to be the recognized official
signal, were heard. Mr Lewis, the
lessee, was not in town, he not yet
having come down from Virginia for
the next season. The loss is several
thousand dollars, which is said to be
nartlv covered by insurance.
The general impression seems to
be that the fire was the work of an
incendiary. It appears difficult to
even imagine how it could have
originated accidentally, yet there
eema to be no clue to the perpetra*
tor.
This building was the property of
the late 0 T Hall, and was the building
in which he carried on his warehouse
business for some fifteen years
preceding his death, which took
place less than a year ago.
Quite a party of our citizens attended
the county convention in
Florence yesterday. Dr A H Williams
introduced the resolution endorsing
Congressman Ragsdale, which
was adopted by a large majority of
the voters present. Capt Blackwell
delivered an eloquent and flattering
tribute to the career of Mr Ragsdale.
One of our young attorneys,
Mr W H Whitehead, Jr, with his
wonderful flow of words, made an
address on pure democracy.
A series of meetings which were
held twice a day last week at the
Baptist church, closed Sunday night.
The pastor was assisted up to Sunday
by Rev John Brunson, of Sumter,
who is one of the most powerful
preachers that the Baptist have
in this section. Sunday morning Dr
W B Oliver, of Florence, conducted
the services, while at night Rev Ben
Truluck, of Bethel, preached.
Mrs Bertha Wolfe, of The Record,
was in town a few hours this morning.
The writer has heard many
speak words of praise upon the
splendid manner in which Mrs Wolfe

Mr B S Josey of Hartsville was in !
* town on one of the closing days of!
last week. He says it is only thirty- j
eight miles from Hartsville to Lake
City. This is not surprising, as, of
course. .Lake City is near the center |
of things.

NO FURTHER GANGER
EXPECTED IN MEXICO
Washington, May 3-?A long telegram
in code reached the war department
late tonight from General
Scott at El Paso, giving a full report
on his conference with Gen Obregon,
the Carranza war minister. Up to
moacaoffj was HppnHpfl
the Washington Government had no
official knowledge of the result of
the discussion between the two military
advisers, although Administration
officials had made no secret of
their satisfaction over press dispatches,
saying that an understanding
had been reached and danger of
a clash with the de facto Mexican
Government removed.
Coker Prevents Shot-Out.
Adel.Ga, May 1:?Valdosta's high
school team won a victory over the
Adel fast nine Saturday on the latter's
grounds by a score of 3 to 1,
The single in the ninth by Carl Coker,
formerly of Kingstree, in the
ninth kept Adel from a shut-out.
There were two men out when the
lonely run was made. Coker was
one of the batteries. Valdosta made
one error and Adel none.

Court Convenes and Adjourns.
Monday was court day at Kingstree,
and the court of common plea;
was expected to and did convene
with Judge J W DeVore presiding
Court Stenographer Wood of Sum
ter was present and the thirty-si>
jurors that had been previously
drawn and subpenaed, together with
all the court officials, were on hand
ready to dig into the routine work oi
the tribunal, when a question arose
as to the legality of holding the
"spring" term of the court here at
this time, the question being basec
upon a recent act of the General As
sembly that calls for certain changes
in the system of holding circuit
courts in South Carolina. On this
account no jury cases were heard,
and the court adjourned at 5 o'clock
Monday afternoon.after a session of
only a few hours.

The speaker of this more than remarkable
statement wasT F Darby,

St. Mr Darby was for one
year foreman for a Columbia niai

the South, he said. He explained
i that ill health forced his removal

change in climate. But it
was not the climate he found, that

! Regarding his suffering and the
; remarkable relief Tanlac quickly
> gave him, Mr Darby said:
"I suffered with nervous indigestion

I left me and I got, to where I could not

night at a Gainesville hospital. My

"Six bottles banished that nervous
indigestion. 1 gained twenty

meal without suffering afterwards.
I am strong, lively and happy, and
my nerves are in fine condition.
My kidneys, which gave me a great

Boy Scouts Organized.
Rev H D Bull and Mr Sidnev M
: Carter have recently interested
themselves in the organization of a
i boy scout patrol in Kingstree, and
it nppeais that their efforts in this
I direction have been successful. At
I a meeting last FrLay atici ..00.1 the
tenderfoot examination was given
j and seven charter scouts enrolled.
These will meet again at Thorn's
J mill next Friday, when the oath of
"allegiance" will be administered.
Another patrol will be organized
some time In June, when the boys
will be free from school duties. A
I similar movement was started here
some months ago and a number of
boys became interested in the organization
under the leadership of a
man whose name is withheld, but
which, by the way, will be recalled
here by those he succeeded in victimizing,
hut this man's organization.
like himself, was a failure in
Kingstree. In the present undertaking
we have much faith and hope
to see a large per cent of Kingstree's
boys enrolling in the organization
this summer.
