Once the Capital of Bulgaria, Now a !
Mere Relic of the Past.
Tiruova, the ancient capital of
Bulgaria, is the national pride of
the central Balkan kingdom, where
is epitomized all the history of the
nation's former greatness,* the
j glories of its brief period of Balkan
i empire. Sofia, the modern capital,
! and all of the more important Bulgarian
cities, are brand new. They
j are promises for the future, while
j Tirnova, perched on a mountain
6ide, is an inspiration from the past.
There are countless attractions in
this remote little city for the
archaeologist and the student of
| history, and the beauty of its construction,
a series of terraces climbing
a long sloping hillside, is worth
going far to see. It is laid out upon
a cliff 500 feet high, and each house
overlooks the roofs of the neighbors
down the street The appearance
of everything about the town is
medieval, oriental and outworn.
! Tirnova was the refuge of tradition,
the one haunt of the old fashioned, i
which Bulgaria possessed before its I
acquisition of equally worn Mace- j
| donian cities as fruits of the war
with Turkey in 1912. Elsewhere :
in the kingdom the peasant folk ,
have not been able to go ahead fast
enough to 6uit them, to pull down
i the old and rebuild according to
the standard, utilitarian, monotone
I tastes of the twentieth century west.
There are a number of ancient
> churches in the city, and one that
j has been a church, a mosque^ a sta!
ble, a jail and a fortress, as vary.

1 tain side. The narrow streets run
up and down, and a promenade in
i the place affords lessons in mouni
tain climbing. Turkish arcades and
eastern balconies line many of the
j streets. Most of the buildings are
! gabled, one storied buildings of
j great age, and these mark off aimj
less alleys that pursue desultory
! wanderings all over the hillside.
Tirnova's golden age was lived
j during the twelfth century. For
; some two centuries it was the capi;
tal of Bulgaria, falling to the Turks
i in 1393. It has little importance
j today save in the affections of the
j Bulgarian patriot. It lies off the
beaten tracks, and, so, though beautiful
in location, it is seldom visited.
Its chief industries are dyeing and
the manufacture of copper ware, i
but they have never developed to |
such an extent as to bring anything
of the modern air or bustle to the

Long Winded.
In the days of his youth Senator
Blackburn of Kentucky was asked
by a friend to second a duel. He
consented, and at the next sunrise
the parties met It was Mr. Blackburn's
dut) to say the last word
concerning the terms of the duel.
One of the senator's colleagues recently
said at a Washington dinner
that although Mr. Blackburn faithfully
performed the duty the duel
never took place.

It is impossible to know who was
the author of the multiplication table,
but it is known to have been in
existence in the days of the builders
of the ruined cities of Mesopotamia,
whose records are now being
patiently deciphered by archae
ologists. Tablets are found wtocn
tell us of their system of education,
banking, accounting, business correspondence,
etc., and among others
are multiplication tables. So the
multiplication table is probably not

Columbia College News.
Columbia, April 17: ? Columbia
college will co-operate with other
educational institutions of learning
in Columbia in producing April 25 a
pageant and masque to celebrate the
tercentenary of the death of Shakspere.
More than a thousand people
will take part in the joyous and elaborate
May-day scene on the University
campus in the afternoon. Many
merry-makers will be there, joining
in the spirit of the day with the good
Queen Elizabeth, courtiers, literary
men and Shakespere's characters.
Columbia college will furnish the
personnel of two measures on the
green, the chorus for a few of Shakspere's
songs, the characters of Romeo
and Juliet,Pericles and The Winter's
Tale and the nine muses. Three
members of the faculty, Profs Peele,
Ariail and Pugh, will appear as officials
of London. It is the duty of
the muses of History, Lyric Poetry,
Tragedy and Comedy to produce the
garland for Shakspere's brow.
In the evening at the Columbia
theater scenes from Shakspere's
plays, woven together in masque
form,will be presented. This instit
ution win produce me statue scent*
from The Winter's Tale. In addi
tion, various ones of the muses will
appear in the connecting: links of the
masque.
The immensity of the undertaking
and the large number of students
taking part make this celebration
State-wide in its significance, and it
will be in reality South Carolina's
tribute to the great bard.
