Some time ago a little girl wanted j
to know what was the Great Seal of,
the State of South Carolina, and upon
being told wanted to know
"Why" and upon being told, wanted
to know further what the
"things" on the seal meant and
then she stumped her informer.

taken and the information, full and
complete, was found. After all the
work had been done the investigator
noted in an on old scrap book
that a paper on the subject had
been read before the Charleston
Chapter of the Sons o? the Revolution
some years ago and all the work
might have been saved by getting
this, but it was then too late. The
_ work had been done.
The great seal is the work of William
Henry Dray tun, one of the men
I who "pushed," so to speak. South
' Carolina in the Revolution. The
| conservative element, though patriotic,
were not ready to plunge into
war with Mother Country. William
Henry Drayton and Christonher
Gadsden aided by others were the
J mainsprings of action in bringing
things to a head in the colony.
In Drayton's Memoirs, one will
j read that the need of a public seal
J becoming apparent in 1776,the Presi
ident and privy council were authorized
by a resolution of the General
Assembly to have one prepared.
William Henry Dryaton and others
were charged with designing the
seal.
Governor John Drayton tells us
that he remembers as a small boy
seeing the mold or die of the great
seal brought by the artist, who was
engraving it, to his father's house.
He does not tell us the name of the
! artist nor does he remember the exact
date. He thought it was not in
the winter time.
0 On page 374 of the memoirs, we
are told just what the seal is intend^
ed to represent and perpetuate:
15! "The device for the armorial
achievement and reverse of the
Great Seal of the State of South
Carolina is as follows:
. Arms. A palmetto tree growing
on the seashore, erect; at its base, a
torn up oak tree, its branches lopped
off, prostrate; both proper. Just
below the branches of the Palmetto,
two shields, pendent; one of them
on the dexter side is inscribed March
26?the other, on the sinister side
July^., Twelve spears, proper, are
bound crosswise to the stem of the
Palmetto, their points raised; the
bond;Upiting them together bearing
the inscription, Quis Separabit, unJ??

Reverse. A woman walking on

? ppes. The seal is in the form of a
circle, four inches diameter, and
four thenths ofvan inch thick."
It was not designed until after
the fort of Sullivan's Island had defeated
the British fleet as all of its
devices will prove. The fort was
constructed of the stems of the Palmetto
trees (Corypha Palmetto)
which grow abundantly our our sea
islands?which 1776 grew on Sullivan's
Island at that time and now.
"The arms were designed by Williams
Henry Drayton, and the original
executed by him with a pen,
bearing a great similitude to what
is represented on the seal, is in possession
of his son, (this in book published
in 1821). It, however, contains
more devices?but this is easily
reconciled by supposing all he had
designed was not deeiped by the
President and Privy Council necessary
to the great seal. The expla*
nation of this side of the seal is the

following: The Palmetto tree on
the seashore represents the fort of
Sullivan's Island; the shields bearing
March 26 and July 3 allude to
the Constitution of South Carolina
which was ratified on the first of
these days; and to the Declaration
of Independence which was signed
on the last of them. The twelve
spears represent the twelve States
which first acceded to the Union.
The dead oak tree alludes to the
British fleet, as being constructed
on oak timbers?and it is prostrate
under the Palme'tto tree because the
fort constructed of that tree defeated
the British fleet, hence the inscription,
Meliarem Lapsa Locavit,
is appropriately placed underneath
it; under which 1776 is in large
figures?alluding to the year the
Constitution of South Carolina was
passed?to the battle faught at Sul
livans Island?to the Declaration oi
Independence?and to the year when
the seal was ordered to be made.
The reverse of the arms is said to
have been designed by Arthur Middleton,
father of Henry Middleton,
Ambassador (1821) to Russia from
the United States.
The woman walking along the seashore
with swords and daggers represents
hope overcoming dangers,
with the sun just rising, which was
about to disclose in the occurrences
of June 28,1776; while the laurel she
holds signifies the honors which Col
Moultrie.his officers and men gained
on that auspicious day. The sun rising
in great brilliancy above the sea
indicates that June 28 was a fine
day; it also bespeaks good fortune.

chiefly because of predictions that
the domestic winter crop this sea ion
would be 165,000,000 bushels less
than in 1915. A report published
Monday morning from a part of Illinois
says: "Fully 40 per cent of the
plants is lost, and some wheat fields
are being prepared for oats; many
moTe will be plowed up later." The
above is given out in Chicago as a
fair sample of many advices received
from Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana,
Kansas and Nebraska.
