"Mannie" Hammett left last week for Columbia, where he is taking a course at a business college. The sewing meeting of St Alban's guild will be held at Mrs P 0 Arrbwsmith's at 4:30 p. m. today. Mr E F Martin visited Mr B F Thompson, who is under treatment at a Charleston hospital, Thursday. Misses Lizzie Hanna and Mattie Brown of Indiantown visited the family of Mr W M Vause Saturday. 44 Rev P S McUiesney was at tsioomingvaie Sunday and preached the commencement sermon to the graded school. Miss Mabel Harper, who teaches at Summerton,was fnKingstree Sunday and attended the McLendon meeting. v Misaes Mary and Maggie Graham of Gourdin8 and Ruth Hinnant of Suttons have been visiting Mrs J N Hammett. There will be no service at the Episcopal church next Sunday, but the usual Wednesday evening service will be held. The Daughters of the Confederacy will hold their regular monthly meeting tomorrow at the home of Miss Agness E Erckmann. Bishop Denny has appointed Rev J B Wilson to the pastorate of the Methodist church here, succeeding i - Rev D A Phillips, now presiding elder. Remember the election to be held here next Monday on the question of levying a special 4-mill tax for the benefit of Kingstree High and Graded school. Miss Lucy Peeples, teacher of the Carlisle school, near Cades, has been summoned to her home in Virginia by the death of her brother,Mr Thos H Peeples. Mr Sam P Stackley has returned from Wadesboro, N C, where he attended Field Day exercises. Peachland school, of which he is principal, ) won eleven prizes. \ Among those noted in Kingstree Tuesday were: Dr L B Johnson, Rome; Hon W D Bryan, Bryan; Messrs W T Rowell, Trio, and E B Rhodus, Greelyville. The Democratic voters of Williamsburg (which means about 99% of the electorate) should read and heed the call of Chairman P H Stoll ? in this issue of The Record. Rev and Mrs W> P Meadors, who apent the wiDter here with the former's daughter, Mrs A C Hinds, left this week for Grahamville, where he expects to build and will later permanently locate. Little Jack is still in Kingstree with Mrs Hinds. A BIG BLAZE IN KINGSTREE. Oil Storage House and Slnnerj Destroyed. The largest fire that has occurrec in Kingstree for almost five years broke out shortly before 10 o'clock last night at the storage building I of the Gulf Oil Refining company, ir the northeastern part of the town Mr S H DuBose, the delivery agenl for that corporation, was filling his tank to serve customers this morn ing, when the building was accident ally ignited. An alarm was immedi atelv turned in. and the fire depart ment responded with a will, but owing to the inflammable nature of the contents of the burning building, it was possible only to save adjoining property, in which good work was done. The fire presented a sublime sight, The black clouds of smoke and the dazzling flames shooting 100 feet ir the air formed a lurid contrast, and the boom of one explosion after another followed in quick succession. The force of these explosions threw the tops of the drums long distances awav. The fire was visible for miles around. The flames quickly spread to the ginnery and office of the Southern Cotton Oil company, and both buildings were soon in ashes. The seed house adjoining the old oil mill and the residence of Mr S C Anderson took fire but were soon extinguished. The A C L R R also sustained slight damage to its crossarms and ties. The oil company had on hand 120 drums bf gasoline and a considerable quantity of kerosene. Of course its loss is total. The cotton oil company had just improved the ginnery at a cost of $1,100. We have not vet ascertained whether it was insured or not. To our valiant fire company and excellent water supply is due the fact that much valuable surrounding property was saved. The Southern Cotton Oil will immediately begin the erection *of an up-to-date plant. Several new candidates are out nnn/\nnAAmaMffi Cilia vveciv nnu men auuuuiikciiiciiic will be found in this paper. These are all good fellows and each will doubtless be remembered by their friends at the ballot box. Come on, boys?the more the merrier! A cold wave struck this community Sunday night, the mercury dropping to 32 degrees,doing considerable damage to garden truck such as was out of the ground, beans and tomatoes apparently faring worse than anything else. Many acres of beans that were planted early for marketing were completely killed. In some sections of the county tobacco plants that had been set out were killed. Farmers had been waiting for rain for some time and that of Friday caused many hundreds of thousands of plants to be put out only to be killed Sunday and Monday nights. Mr Mcintosh has been with the company for some time, and his promotion is a just recognition of services rendered in the past. "Koger," as he is known, is one of Kingstree's livest business men, competent in many lines and.above all, honest and straightforward in his dealings with his fellowmen. We congratulate him npon his recent promotion and hope that he will go still higher up the ladder of advancement. Several parties of Kingstreeans went to Florence Tuesday to witness the great film production, "The Birth of a Nation". Some made the trip by auto, while others went by train. The Kingstree Civic Club and Li' brary association held its regular t monthly meeting Thursday afteri noon at the school house. New committees for the year were appointed, ! with thefollowingaschairmen: Street committee, Mrs T E Arrowsmith; court house committee, Mrs A C 1 Swails; station committee, Mrs W E Brockinton; park committee, Mrs W U uaiDorne; HDrary committee, mrs L W Gilland. Routine business was taken up and reports made by committees. The committee appointed to secure promises from all the merchants to keep the premises around 1 their places of business clean reported hearty cooperation of all business men. The street committee will rei quest the town council to provide large covered garbage cans for the business portions of the town. The park committee was authorized to !?ut the swings,see-saws.etc, in thorough order, and the library committee to solicit the gift of books for the library, which has not yet been started. In accordance with the request of this association the citizens of Kingstree will observe next Tuesday. 18th jinst, as "clean-UD day". New Buildings In Town. Mr F K Graham is building a cot! tage residence in Worth Kingstree, j at the corner of Kelley street and Third avenue. Money for the Carnegie library, $6,000 donated by Mr Andrew Carnegie, is now available, and work on this building will doubtless begin at an early date. Mayor Scott?several days ago received a letter to this effect from the secretary of the Carnegie Library corporation. Hon R H Kellahan is having the old frame cottage on Academy street next to the Presbyterian church torn dov^n preparatory to erecting a handsome new dwelling on the site. Dr R J McCabe will be in Andrews on the 18th inst and will re j mam ten aays. Child Bitten by Mad Dog. A mad dog ran amuck on the streets of Kingstree Monday afternoon and attacked Miss Margaret Burgess, pretty little seven-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs C C Burgess. tearing her clothing into shreds and painfully if not seriously lacerating her person. Dr T S Hemingway, uncle of the little girl, immediately telegraphed to Columi bia for the Pasteur treatment which is being administered here. The i dog was killed and its head sent to the State laboratory at Columbia for examination. Tuesday afternoon information was received from Columi bia stating that the brute was afflicted with rabies. While the little girl > is in considerable pain, she is thought by her physician to be getting along , well. The dog was apparently a common hound and no one seems to know to whom it belonged* It was shot by Mr T C Jacobs on East Main street aoon after biting the little girl.
