I SIMPLICITY. | "How grand," says some one after listening to what we call an "eloquent and masterful discourse" or after readino- a ereat collection of high sounding or melodious arrangement of words. But how many of these things last? After hearing what we call a great prayer by an able divine, one is profoundly impressed, moved to exclaim, "How impressive" and yet how long is it remembered? Compare one of these with the Lord's Prayer. How simple it seems, yet it has lived through two thousand years, has been formed millions of times on human lips in each generation and will be as long as time shall last. It does not take half an hour to recite nor is it full of words that are strange to many persons. Grand in its simplicity, it is. Perhaps you have forgotten it or are unfamiliar with it. Read it now: "Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in Heaven, so on earth. Give us this day our daily bread. . And forgive us or debts, as we also forgiven our debtors. And bring us not into temptation, butdeliverus from the evil one." And as the editors of the Revised Version explain, many ancient auth-] ontios add, "For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen." No pope, no bishop, no priest, no doctor of divinity, no man has ever equaled it in simplicity as a prayer from man to God. r?f tha sr.ppfhps made bv Ameri can statesmen the one destined to become to the best known is Lincoln's Gettysburg speech and it is the shortest. It is not only short, but it is simple. Read it: Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to tho proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation * * * or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We are met to dedicate a portion of it as the final resting place of those who have given their lives that the nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we might do this. But, in a large sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above pur power to. add to or detract. The wo Id will very little nnf* nnr lone remember what we say here; but it can never forget | what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here, to unfinished work they have thus far so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us; that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation shall, under God,have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
