SOLICITOR COOPER
AND GOVERNORSHIP,
THE QUESTION OF LAURENS MAP
ENTERING RACE IS AGAIN
BEING AGITATED.
Columbia, January 30:?The ques
tion of whether Solicitor Robert P

summer is again being agitated, ant

question until Mr Cooper makes i
statement himself about the matter
This talk was heard from last sum
mer, but appeared to quiet down
However, that it is again being agi
tated is evidenced by the the follow
ing, which appeared in a recent issu<
of the Anderson Daily Mail:
"On returning from Columbia to
day Anderson citizens who had spen
some time around the halls of th<
General Assembly declare that th<
'Robert A Cooper for Governor
sentiment has come boldly an<
strongly to the front again, an<
they firmly believe that the Lauren
Solicitor will be in the race whei
the gong rings.
"The Cooper sentiment is genera
throughout the State, according t
information that has radiated int
Columbia from all sections, and it i
growing stronger. Great pressur
is being brought to bear on him,am
there seems to be no doubt in th
minds of many but that he will be
candidate this summer. The rac
will then be a three-cornered one
with Governor Manning asking re
election and Mr Blease and M
Cooper, declared the Columbia vis
itor.
"Now, since Mr McLaurin ha
been re-elected warehouse com mil
sioner, it is practically certain h
will not make the race for Govemoi
He recently intimated that he woul
ran should he be defeated for r<
election as commissioner."
APPARENTLY SOMETHING IN IT.
There can be no doubt that ther
is something in all this, but just ho'
much is largely a matter of indivic
ual opinion. Some of those who ar
urging Mr Cooper to run for Go^
ernor are "sore" on Governor Mar
ning, and still others, according t
all signs and some additional infoi
mation, are affiliated with the Bleas
faction, and are whispering this ir
formation into Mr Cooper's ^eai
hoping to get him into the race t
split the Manning vote, and thu
give Mr Blease some chance, as the
figure that a solid vote behind Gov
?rnor Manning leaves absolutel
nothing but certain and swift de
feat for Mr Blease in a race be
tween him and the Governor alone
Of course, Mr Cooper is a ver;
popular man, but it is significan

himself that he will not run for

those who are interested in Mr Coop
er's.politieal future, and are sincere
ly desirous that he do the righ
thing, are advising him not to run
but to wait until 1918, when he car
win in a walk, according to all th(
indications. They don't want-to sec
him slaughtered in 1916, and thej
don't believe that he will yield tc
the blandishments of at least some
of those urging him that wish tc
crush Governor Manning and care
really nothing for Mr Cooper.
Those who worked for the popular
and able solicitor in 1914 are against
him running this summer, for they
believe the fight will be straight and
clear between Governor Manning

is attempting to get behind Mr

TRYING TO CAUSE DIVISION.
"Knowing from the bitter experience
of 1914 that a house divided
against itself cannot stand, efforts
are being made by the opposition to
divide the Manningites and at the
3ame time to avoid any split in their
own ranks. They are trying to

The congestion of stomach waste
in the bowels is evidenced in various
ways; bloat, eructation of foul stom- i

. prompt attention, not only to relieve
the present discomfort but also
to avoid possible disease that fole

tion.
Harsh cathartics and violent purt
gatives should not be emplo3red, as
these afford only temporary relief, I
e while they serve to shock the entire '
e system. A mild laxative such as Dr I
' Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is far prefj
erable and is now the remedy genj
erally used and prescribed by many
doctors. It is free from opiate or
8 narcotic drugs, acts easily and pleasn
antly, without griping or other pain
and is a safe, effective family remedy.

both services Sunday afternoon, and
it made me feel proud to see the
people, young as well as old, come
up and give the preacher their hands
and the Lord their hearts. I hope
they are sincere and will prove steadfast
and true. I hope the oeople of
Lake City will live up to what they
have claimed, as I have many warm
friends in and around that place.
I had the pleasure of shaking
hands with my old friend, Hon W D

the meeting at Lake City.
Hon J Davis Carter and son, Mr R

Saturday.
Mr R A Brown spent a few days
in Lake City last week attending the

Mr and Mrs Walter Poston and
