Kingstret DEMONSTRATION WORK In Tick Eradication by V. S. E partment of Agriculture. Washington, D C, January 17; As a result of ten years' experiei in tick eradication, the Federal ficials in charge of the campai are convinced that the hearty operation of the people themseh is absolutely essential to succe The Department of Agricultur representatives in the field, the fore, have been warned of the di ger of beginning systematic work any county before public opinion ready to lend vigorous support the enterprise. It frequently hi pens that a few of the more p gressive farmers are earnest ad cates of tick eradication, while 1 rest of the community may be eitl indifferent or actually hostile. Ii number of instances in the p when tick eradication has been 1 gun under these circumstances has been found necessary, after t or three years, for the Federal G ernment to withdraw its men I cause the results of their work we to a great extent, nullified by poi lar indifference. To make a suoc of eradication, all cattle in the coi ty mustl be dipped regularly, practice, this is only possible wl the great majority of the people i so stronglyfin favor of the w( that they Jwill insist upon the i forcement of the necessary regu tions. Kecent intructions sent out fn Washington to the men in charge the infested regions directed thi to procure a list of voters in a county in which there were ma festations of local interest in ti eradication. Circular letters a pamphlets explaining the evil of t tick and the possibility of its elir nation are then to be sent to this li The next step is to arrange \ practical demonstrations of dippir Since the the Federal departim has no funds at its disposal for t purpose, the construction of derm stration vats must be undertak either bylthe local authorities or one or morejpublic-spirited and pi gressive stock owners. The cost building a vat is comparativ< small, and it has been found ti these practical demonstrations ? by far the most effective method convincing farmers that the tick c be eradicated without any injury the live stock. As soon as the vi are built, a number of demonst: tions should be held in order to gi all the people of the county an ( portunity to see for themselves tl dipping does no injury to catt There is a widespread belief amo the less informed stock owners the tick-infested regions that t arsenic in the dipping vats pois( cattle and dries up milch cows. T erroneous notion may be easily c pelled if arrangements are made 1 holding the dipped cattle on ex bition for a few days. After a series of such demonst tions, meetings of farmers are hi and the benefits of tick eradicati explained. Ordinarily, these me ings lead to the organization county live stock associations, whi have been found very influent :W "Cured" | lce ?, Mrs. Jay McOee, of Stepb- M ?f~ enville, Texas, writes: "For en & nine (9) years, I suffered with co- X womanly trouble. 1 had ter- WI . It ^a" is customary for these associations to apply to the county board for the om materials for the vats and for the in chemicals used in the baths. Until 0m satisfactory arrangements have been made in this or some similar way ni" for the construction of sufficient 'c^ vats to accommodate all the cattle n(* in the county without driving them :^e long distances, the time is not ripe ni" to undertake active eradication work. In most instances the law re:or quires that before such work is un*? dertaken the county should vote for 'nt it in a special election. Even where "e no election is actually required, the )n" moral effect of the expression of the en people's will is greatly to be desired, by Systematic eradication work means ro- the dipping of all cattle in the counof ty every 14 days in a standard arsly senical solution. If this regulation is lat rigidly enforced, one season should ire see the elimination of the ticks and of the freeing of the county from quaran antine. Every dipping, however, to should be supervised by regularly ats appointed inspectors and the arsenira cal solution should be tested and ive made of standard strength each >p- time that the vat is used. Furtherlat more, care should be taken to ac;le. count for each cow in the territory ng in which the vat is located. A few in neglected animals will afford a ref;he uge for the tick and, in time, undo >ns all that has been accomplished by his the dipping of the others, lis- The regulations necessarily involve for some inconvenience to cattle owners Ijj. As has already been said, therefore, before active work is undertaken it is essential that public sentiment be ra* brought to a point where the inconeld venience is cheerfully put up with, ion In general, one or two years' prelim- 1 et> inary work is sufficient for this purpose. The free use of demonstration vats will do much toward shortening the period and increasing enthusiasm ;ial for the active work that is to follow. dEI/1 arrival of the Spring lblic to our large line and Work Pants and 1 of a pair of good Work Shoes son's is the place to find them, shown such a line of Work 1 Dress Shoes. famous Steadfast and BuiltLinson Williamsburg county, State of South Carolina, containing forty-eight acres, more or less, and bounded North by J * Black River; Eaat by lands of Harry ?
