A "Slaughter of the Innocence."
Turkeys for Christmas dinner.
Even Christmas has its tly in the
ointment. The bills must be paid.
Come right on in, Santa, our
chimney is large and the fireplace j
is wide open.
A few more days and we will be
ushering in a new year to bless and
a new grist of bills to cuss.
The celebration of Christmas is
presuiped to l)e in honor of the
birth of Christ, but quite often
many of us slip a mental cog and it
becomes'a wild jamboree in the ser- j
vice of the devil. Let us try and i
keep ourselves in proper gear day
after tomorrow.
New Ordinances.
In this issue of The Record two
new ordinances are published for
the edification of the public. These
ordinances have just been passed
and ratified by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the town and with their
passage became effective, and will
be enforced by the police officers.
Both of the ordinances were enacted
for the public good and it is to be
hoped that the provisions of each
will be strictly complied with by all.
The ordinance relating to and prescribing
punishment for cruelty to
horses or mules is a good one and
should not only be on the statute ;
books of every incorporated town in
the country, but should be rigidly
enforced. It is humane in its ten- 1
?dency, and the person who is not
humane by nature should pay the
penalty exacted for cruelty to these
beasts of burden. I

Now we approach the glorious
Christmas day with feelings of sorrow,
and sadness, and regret, for
we are soon to witness the death of
a year of death.
Today, when we should revel in
the joy of living, we are consumed 1

who are perishing in the blood soaked
trenches of Europe.

it ordained by the Mayor and
Aldermen of the Town of Kingstree,
S C,in Council assembled and by the
authority of the same:
I. That from and after the passage
and ratification of this Ordinance
it shall be unlawful for any
person or persons, firm or corporation
to place on or over or across
any sidewalk or pavement on Main
street, Academy street or Hampton
avenue of said town any awning or
awning frames unless such frames be
constructed of iron or other metal,
extending not less than eight feet
from the regular building line of
ihe street, and elevated at a height
of not less than seven feet from the
pavements of said streets.
II. That any person or persons,
firm or corporation violating the
provisions of this Ordinance shall be
punished by a fine of not less than
$5.00 nor more than $25.00 or by
imprisonment for not less than 10
days nor more than 30 days.
III. That all Ordinances inconsistent
with the provisions of this Ordinance
be and the same are hereby
repealed.

and ratification of this Ordinance:
I. It shall be unlawful for any
person or persons to overload, overwork,
overdrive, torture, torment,
wantonly or cruelly beat or bruise,
cut or ill treat any horse, mule or
other draught animal or beast of
burden used within the limits of the
Town of Kingstree, S C, for the
transportation of persons, goods,
wares and merchandise, or in any
other manner to inflict any unnecessary
pain or suffering upon any such
horse, mule or other draught animal
or beast of burden by working such
animal when in an unfit condition,
within the limits of the Town of
Kingstree, S C. '
II. It shall be unlawful for any
persoh or persons to use, work or
employ in any measure any bruised,
maimed, sick or lame draught animal
or beast of burden used within
the limits of the Town of Kingstree,
