Johnsonville,November 14:?Johnsonville has recently closed a contract for a three day chautauqua course beginning Friday, November 19. The attractions on these occasions are under the same management as those furnished during the chautauqua last.spring, and that, within itself, should be sufficient assurance of a most excellent programme for these three days. Mr H J Gasque of Marion has recently located here and is installing a newspaper plant here for the publication of the Johnsonville Progress, a weekly newspaper, the first issue of which will appear next week. The yery hearty response with which Mr Gasque is meeting by all citizens in this enterprise bespeaks the healthy growth that Johnsonville has shown since its incorporation two years ago, as well as the unbounded faith its people have in its future. Hanna. jjr This community was grieved to hear of the death of Mrs Sallie Hanna, wife of Mr D H Hanna, Thursday morning of last week at 9 o'clock,after an illness of two weeks. XXX A Colleton county jury, after only twenty minutes deliberation, last night found a white man guilty of the murder of a negro, something that has not occurred there since before the war. Ouillie Osteen, a young white man of the upper part of the county, was convicted at Walterboro with recommendation to mercy for the sooting of Ernest Copeland, colored, under circumstances as portrayed by the State's witnesses of great brutality. XXX Captain Thomas Pinkney, one of Charleston's best known and honored citizens, died at his home in that city Sunday morning. This distinguished gentleman was born in Charleston 87 years ago and was a veteran of the civil war. He first attended school at Pendleton, was a student at the Virginia Military institute and graduated from the South Carolina ^Medical college in 1850. He was also a graduate of the New York University of Medicine. He retired from active business some years ago.
