Kingstree, South Carolina
Sunday-school Rally Day.
Sunday afternoon was appropriately
observed at the Presbyterian
church here as "Sunday-school Rally
Day," when a highly intersting programme
was carried out by members
of the Sunday-school classes and
others. The exercises which took
place at 4:30 p. m., were opened by
the singing of "Onward, Christian
Soldiers," followed by the invocation
by the pastor, Rev P S McChesney.
An interesting feature of the
program was the scripture reading.
This reading was based upon the
theme "Whosoever will, let him
take the water of life freely" and
I was read in sections ascribed to the
superintendent, the pastor, the congregation,
officers, junior intermediate
and primary departments,
men and boys, women and girls,
each of these reading separately.
Recitations were charmingly ren

and Annie Laurie Singleton, also by
George Ansel Nelson, Steele Singleton
and Miss Mert'se Mcintosh and
Peden Montgomery. The most brilliant
feature of the exercises was
perhaps the address of Rev James 0
Reavis, D D, of the faculty of the
r Theological Seminary at Columbia.
Dr Reavis is an able, eloquent and
forceful speaker, and every word of
his address was interesting to the
four or five hundred men, women
and children who heard him on this
occasion Sunday afternoon.
Dr Reavis also occupied the pulpit
of the Presbyterian church here
Sunday at the regular morning and
evening services.

1 POLITICAL ENEMITY
ENDS IN TRAGEDY.
ONE MAN KILLED AND FOUR
WOUNDED IN COMMITTEE
AT CHARLESTON.
Animosities arising out of the municipal
campaign ending in the primary
at Charleston Tuesday,October
12, with the apparent nomination
for Mayor of Tristram T Hyde over
the incumbent, John P Grace, by a
majority of 19 votes, flamed into
bloodshed when the city Democratic
Executive committee met at noon
last FriHav to canvass the returns.
Hardly had the chairman, Joseph A
Black a Hyde man, declared the
meeting open before a shot struck
down Sidney J Cohen, a young reporter
of the Charleston Evejjng
Post, and in the more or less general
exchange of shots which followed
four men, all of the Grace faction,
were wounded, two of them seriously.
During the affray two or three
ballot boxes and several club books
were hurled out through windows
and in the ensuing scramble in the
street two men were clubbed.
W A Turner has a bullet in his
righ lung, W E Wingate is wounded
in the hip and has a scalp contusion,
Harry L Wilensky is shot in the arm
and Jeremiah O'Brien is shot in the
ankle. Max Goldman and Tristram
T Hyde, Jr, suffered minor bruises.
Then men were arrested and afterward
released on bail, but of these
none is charged with actual participation
in the affray. Some of them
are he:d for carrying concealed
weapons, the others being merely
detained.
Stories of the clash differ wideband
no dependable account in detail
as to just how or by whom the shoot
of the court, as the result of the
hearing on a writ of habeas corpus
by Circuit Judge Mendel L Smith
Monday morning, the two men having
been arrested by the police last
Friday.
The jury, composed of Andrew J
Geer, foreman; E P Guerard, Samuel
G Stoney, Edward N Chisholm, John
E Gibbs and T Grange Simons Jr,
retired at 8:15 o'clock last night.
During the three davs of the inquest
in the county courthouse sixtynine
witnesses appeared. Members
of the executive cor mittee were
1 heard first. Ten witnesses were
heard Monday, twenty-four Tuesday
and thirty-five yesterday.

asserted that Henry J Brown fired
the first shot, while a number of
others stated that he did not. Testimony
on other points also conflicted.
ing was done has been determined.
Forty naval militiamen guard the
committee headquarters and 250
other men are held in armories under
command of Col E M Blythe of
the First infantry.
Gov Manning at Columbia, immediately
upon being informed of the
shooting, ordered the Washington
Light Infantry, a Charleston company,
to the scene. The company,
with bayonets fixed, quickly cleared
the streets outside the building
where it was feared trouble would
develop. Later the guardsmen aided
the police and spelial deputies in
patrolling the street and remained
on duty late Friday night.
LATER REPORTS.
At 1:07 o'clock this morning the
jury in the coroner's inquest into
the death of Sidney J. Cohen, a reporter
for the Evening Post, shot in
the room of the City Democratic
Executive Committee last Friday, an
nounced the following verdict:
"That the said Sidney J. Cohen
came to his death October 10, 1915,
at the Roper hospital, Charleston
county, from a 38-calibre pistol shot
wound, said pistol having been fired
from the vicinity of doorway between
anteroom and executive committee
room on southwest corner
King and George streets, Charleston
county, by party or parties unknown
to the jury, on October 15, 1915."

Says Simple La
Better
Case ot Chronic Constipation Yields to
Mild Laxative Compound.
Writing from The House of the
Good Shepherd, at Sunnyside Aye
and 50th St, Seattle, where she is the
i guest of her life-long friend the
j Reverend Mother, Mrs Mary Austin,
I widow of a wealthy San Franciscan,
| who lost everything in the fire of
j 1906, says she experienced speedy
relief from the use of Dr Caldwell's
Syrup Pepsin and that she found
this gentle, pleasant-tasting laxative
more effective than several doses of
castor oil.
The active principles of several
laxative herbs are combined in Dr
Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin to act on
the eliminative organs in an easy,
naturaf way, without griping or other
discomfort. Its freedom from opiate
or narcotic drug of every description,
combined with its gentle
action and positive effect, make it
the ideal laxative for family use.
Druggists everywhere sell it for fifty
cents a bottle.
Big Rattler Killed.
Mr W N Clarkson, a progressive
farmer of the Heinemann section,
reports to us that while cutting hay
?e day last week the machine beonme
so badly clogged that the cutting
blades refused to vibrate. The
driver, seeing that a quantity of hay
was clogged into the machinery, was
about to put his hand in to remove
it when he heard a peculiar noise,
which proved to be that of a large
rattlesnake caught in one of the
blades. About twelve inches of the
serpent's body was projecting upright
through the hay and, being in
severe pain, was striking furiously
j about him. Mr Clarkson says the
I noise of the rattles probably saved
i his driver from being bitten. The
! snake,when killed, measured about 5
feet and carried a bunch of IT rati
ties and a button, which, according
to theory, indicates that the snake
was about 18 years old.
The Quinine That Does Not Affect The Head
Because of its tonic and laxative effect. LAXATIVE
BROMO QUININE is better than ordinary
Quinine and does not cause nervousness nor
