GROWING COLORED COTTON.
Mr Brabham Tells What He Ha;
Done and Expects to Do.
Mr A \V Brabham of Olar, in i
letter to The New York Sun, tell
of his experiments in the product
lion of colored cotton as follows:
"About a month ago there ap
peareel in The Sun an editorial ar
ticle complimentary tome and nr
success in producing cotton ii
tusal colors. Luther llurbank wa
quoted a- saying that black cotba
would nut 1 ?e produced in this gen
oration if-ever. You said that i
would take much to convince tli
public that I could produce cottoi
dyed by nature. Now. 1 am grow
ing several sorts of tinted cotton
They can he taken to any chemist
and if he finds a trace of artificia
d3'e, why. as a man and Mason,
shall have no more to say. A brigh
yellow sample is grown in Louisiana
but the other colored cotton I hav
grown and gathered by own hands
My samples represent the work o
five. Having no tinted cotton t<
begin with, what may I not ex pec
in the next five years when I nov
have nearly a dozen colors to worl
upon?
"Cotton has a greater affinity fo
colors than any other plant in ex
istence. A little help'on the par
of man is all that is necessary,
am getting close to my goal, blacl
colors. If my life is spared 1 hop'
to produce a sample of black lint ;
year hence. I can not respond faj
orably to requests for seed, as I an
keeping it for my own experiment
ing. My mail has become burden
some, and I hop3 you will publisl
this so that perhaps some the peo
pie will know that I am being beret
by the public."

I love the word co-operation, be!
cause it is one of the fundamental
principles of life laid down by the
'jdivine Creator. It means much to
the individual, to every family, to
the community, to State, to the nation
and to the world.
As an instance of co-operation by
the Federal government J will mention
the boys' corn clubs and the
i girls' tomato clubs of our county.
.'The Federal government has the
co-operation ol the State of South
! Carolina; the State government has
' i the co-operation of the counties and
the counties of the communities and
| homes of and individuals among us
, I You see today the results?one of
j the finest exhibits of home products
that can be produced, not only for
quality but also for variety.
Take the pimento or sweet red
pepper for illustration. This vegetable
is most valuable because of its
digestive properties. The pimento is
a child of co-operation. The Spaniards
long years ago grafted the red
pepper onto the tomato bush and as
a result of this graft we nave a vegetable
looking like the red pepper
but having the pulpy rind and juice
of the tomato. The Federal government
recently sent one of its agents
to Spain to study this plant, and
when our State government lent a
listening ear she was told by the
Federal government: "If you will
only co-operate with me I will make
your State the foremost in the production
of this vegetable, thereby
saving the two million dollars spent
I
annually by your people for the
canned imported product." By coj
operation our State is working hand
in hand with the Federal government;
our county is working hand
in hand with the State; the different
communities are co-operating with
the county and as a result you will
see today in our administration building
the delicious products of co-operation.
I thank you for your co-operation
and attention.
