MURDER NEAR TOWN.
Colored Man In Jail Here for
Killing Negress.
Olin Patterson, about 23 years
old, was brought to Kingstree late
Saturday night, and lodged in jail,
charged with the shooting of Lizzie
Wilder at the home of her father,
Henry Wilder, on the plantation of
MrJT Sexton, about three miles
north of town. A postmortem was
held by Drs Jacobs and Kelley Sunday
morning.
Coroner H U Kinder and a jury
composed of Messrs Ed McCants,
Hugh Altman, W J Cockfield, .J T
Sexton. J R Pendergrass and Sam
McClary, held an inquest and the
evidence offered was to the effect
that Patterson, who had been making
his home at Lizzie Wilder's
house, also located on Mr Sexton's
place, had quarreled with the woman
011 Friday night. On Saturday
night he did not find her at her
own h#ne and taking a single
barrel shot gun from the woman's
house, went to the home of her
father, Henry Wilder, where he
found her in company with her
parents and a number of other
darkies. Patterson, it seems, went
into the house leaving the gun on
the outside; he tried to talk with
Lizzie, and proffered her a piece of
cheese as a peace offering, this she
refused, and would have nothing to
say to Patterson, whereupon he
stepped out of the house and shot
her in the hack, the entire charge
lodging in the upper part of the
right lung. The woman died from
the wound a few hours later.
Patterson attempted to run after j
he had shot the woman hut was;
captured byRobt Epps, who was in j
the Wilder home at the time of the
shooting, but not until he had re-'
ceived a blow on the head with the |
gun which l>ent the barrel to an';
angle of several degrees. Epps and <
Mr Sexton succeeded in tieing Rut-jj
terson and brought him to jail here;
as above stated. Patterson is from j
Darlington county and came here 11
about eight years ago with Mr Sex -j1
ton in whose.employ the negro has'
been ever since. :
