I Blease at Boston.
Why should there be such a raising
of hands on the part of the Governors
at Boston because of ex-Governor
Blease's reiteration of his wellknown
sentiments as to the lynching
of negroes is hard to understand. |
The Governors invited him there and
they ought to haye known what to
expect. His performance at Richmond
was enough of itself to put
them on notice as to what they would
probably get. To have put him down
on the programme for a serious discussion
of the treatment of criminals
was nothing short of insulting to the
State of South Carolina in view of
the gross and outrageous manner in
which he abused his powers in this
regard during the four years of his
incumbency. If those who asked him
to speak on this subject didjnot know
his reconLthey should have done so.
Some of the Northern newspapers

in Charleston asking for

or Blease's utterances. The people
of South Carolina gave their verdict
in this matter just a year ago. The
issue of the campaign which was
fought out in South Carolina last
summer was whether or not South
Carolina should give its endorsement
to the orgy of lawlessness which had
been maintained throughout the
Blease administration. Its emphatic ?
refusal to do so resulted in Blease's
defeat for the United States Senate
and the election of Richard I Manning
as Governor. It was Mr Manning
whom the people of South Car- ,
olina delegated to represent them at
the Boston conference of Governors, j

MEXICAN SITUATION GRAVE.
Battles between Americans and
Mexicans Reported.
Brownsville, Tex, September 4: ?
With many Mexicans reported mass
?d along the river where today's
cattle took place, 3ixty-five miles
?ast of here, with communication
aetween here and San Benito, in the
aid district, all but broken by wire
gutters, and a sudden calling to
irms of all troops stationed at Fort
3rown tonight, the situation growng
out of today's hostilities has developed
swiftly to one of grave
possibilities.
Late tonight advices reached here
:hat an attempt had been made to
lut all the wires between this city
and San Benito, nineteen miles north
af here. Ail the wires leading to
this direction but one were cut,
severed strands being plainly visible,
rhis was done a few miles north of
the scene of Thursday's battle with
troopers and Mexicans, but in the
same section of country.
At Poufl7A'? rVnaaino- u/hpr?- i.IiP
battle took place today, the river
bank is reported tonight to be literally
lined with Mexicans, although
it is not known whether there are
any Carranza soldiers among them.
Th? so-called Carranza lines run
near the crossing and it is reported
that a train brought many from
Matamoros tonight to the scene of
the fight. The place is closely guard
^ t ? i ? i i
;d since the firing ceasea at 4 o ciock
this afternoon.
With at least ten known Mexicans
iead and probably as many more
todies lying in the dense brush, the
lght between a band of Mexican
jutlaws and eighty United States
:avalrymen, aided by Texas Rangers
and armed citizens, ended late this
afternoon. One American trooper
rvas wounned.
At 4 o'clock the Mexicans withirew
from the south bank of the
rlio Grande and hid in the brush,
apparently awaiting another oppor;unity
to attack. The battle had
)een waged practically the entire
lay, the two forces firing at each
>ther across the Rio Grande at a
3oint four miles west of Old Hidalgo,
Texas.
The injured American was John
Salvini, private in Troop D, 3d cavalry,
who sustained a serious wound
n the left hip.
Capt J C McCoy, who commanded
;he American forces, returned to

iead Mexicans could be seen from
Texas side, and that probably as
nany more Mexicans had been killed
n the brush by shots fired from the
Texas side. Unofficial reports had
placed the Mexican dead at twentyive
to thirty. The number of Mexcans
engaged was placed at forty.

MEDICOES IN MONTHLY SESSION
Adopt Resolutions Against Illegal
Practice ol Medicine.
The regular meeting of the Williamsburg
Medical association was
held at the Kellahan Hotel here
Monday at noon. The meeting was
presided over by the president, Dr
W V Brockington, while Dr J H
Pratt acted as secretary pro tern.
The following members were present:
Drs I N Boyd; E 0 Taylor, W M
O'Bryan, W G Gamble, C D Jacobs,
US JUICC. rtUUUl 10 ^aimuo v/x iiil
juice will make 1 gallon of sirup.
This amount of juice can ordinarily
be secured from 10 watermelons
weighing from 22 to 25 pounds each.
The juice is then boiled down into
a sirup in an ordinary preserving
kettle.. The. juice boils without
much foaming until it begins to
thicken, when the fire should be
slackened to prevent foaming and
burning. The red coloring matter
in the juice coagulates during boiling,
and part of it rises to the surface,
where it can be removed by
skimming. The remainder floats
about in the juice, forming red
particles which gather near the top.
Toward the last of the boiling the
sirup must be watched constantly.
If the housewife has a candy thermometer,
she should take the 3irup
from the fire as soon as it reaches a
temperature of 220 degrees F.,
otherwise she should let it cook until
a small sample on cooling is about
as thick as maple sirup.
When the boiling has finished, the
sirup can be set aside to cool in covered
vessels or can be poured while
hot into cans or glass containers and
sealed.
Where a cider press is available
the melons can be cut into pieces
and arranged on the press so that
the pressure will extract the juice
of the pulp before it presses the
rind. The juice of the rind is not
so rich in sugar, and experiments
with rind juice alone indicate that
it is not suitable for sirup.
If it is desired to make the sirup
free from red particles, start the
sirup boiling, and when some of the
coagulated matter has been removed
by skimming, transfer the juice to
tall glass jars or other tall containers
and allow it to settle and cool
for a few hours. This allows the
red particles to settle to the bottom.
The upper part of the juice can then
be poured off and boiled into sirup.

The meeting was a highly interesting
one from the profession's
view point as a number of interesting
subjects were instructively discussed.
It was brought to the attention
of the association that a
number of quacks were practicing
medicine in Williamsburg county
and with a view to putting an end
to such practice warning resolutions
were adopted by the association.
These resolutions are published in
another column of The Record today.
Dr W M O'Bryan was appointed
delegate to the Pellagra conference
which meets in Columbianextmonth,
a?ifh Dr f! D Jambs as alternate.
The next meeting of the society
will be held Monday, October 4.
