Miss Mary James Britton left Kingstree Tuesday morning for a ^ visit to Saluda, N C, and Pickens. Mrs E C Burgess and children have returned from Waynesville, N C, where they spent several weeks. Dr A M Snider, who is taking a yacation at Reedy Creek Springs, came to Kingstree Tuesday to vote. Mrs Mary Stutts and Mr Alline Matthews visited the family of Mr N A Lesesne near Greely ville Sunday. Mesdames J A Herring,iK H Godwin and James Patton, with their children, have gone to Wrightsville Beach, N C. Mr K C Kirby of Cades was in Kingstree Tuesday and sold tobacco. He was well pleased with the prices j, 3te received. Miss Jennie Lee Stackley is spending: a few days of her vacation at home, after visiting friends in Landrum. Mrs E C Spann of Lake City was | the guest of friends in Kingstree this week. Mrs Spann is a sister of Mrs Edwin Epps. Mr W N Jacobs went to Sullivan's Island Sunday and returned next day with his family, who have been spending the summer there. Misses Milton Stackley of Kingstree and Mollie Young of Mouzons are visiting their brother and sister, Mr and Mrs W P Young,at Florence. Dr C D Jacobs, accompanied by his wife and children, returned last night from Gaffney, where Mrs Jacobs and their two children have been on an extended visit to relatives. While sliding down a banister Thursday afternoon, little Eugene St Amand fell and broke his arm. t)r T S Hemingway reduced the fracture and it is hoped that the injured member will soon be restored to use. Division Superintendent C L Porter, of the Atlantic Coast Line, and wife of Rocky Mount,NC, are visiting relatives here this week. Mr and Mrs Porter are being charmingly entertained by their many friends here. Among those noted here Tuesday from out of town were: Messrs S M Haynesworth, Foreston; J Y McGill, : W P Snowden, Benson; Warren J Montgomery, Greelyville; W 0 Cam; lin, Bloomingvale; and J J Snow, Rome. , Mrs L H McCullough and little Miss Mary Rembert left last week for Boydton, Va, where Mrs McCullough will join her husband, Mr L - casion. They are planning to have Judge R 0 Purdy of Sumter, or Senator Charlton DuRant of Manning, also to speak on this occasion. A committee of ladies is arranging special music?string band at the gate and singing by chorus of children in the hall. The room will be decorated with ferns and flowers. David Epps would have taken the prize had one been offered for the tackiest boy. p The Tobacco Market. The Kingstree tobacco market has ; been on a boom this week. A large 'quantity of the golden weed has I marketed and from all reports bet| ter prices have prevailed here than | on any other market in this section. Tuesday's sale was unusually large and the prices paid were more satisfactory than at any time since the opening of the market this season. Miss Amy Weeks, National W C T U lecturer, under the auspices of the ladies' societies of the Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian churches of Kingstree, will speak in the court house next Monday evening at 8:30 o'clock. Baptist Courier, Greenville, will j preach at the Baptist church here Sunday morning and at Lake City i that night. Dr Codey is one of the leading members of the Southern ! Though State agent Miss Parrott and assistant State agent Mrs Dora Dee Walker were not present here to take part in the demonstration work last Friday.as wa9 expected,the occasion was made highly interesting and successful by assistant State agent Miss Grace Huffington and county agent Miss Amanda Edwards. Many young ladies of the county, who are showing much interest in canning and other departments of domestic science, were present, and the ladies of Kingstree also manifno+n/l o Aaar\ inforoat in thp work. Bread making was also an interesting feature of the programme. The work was carried on in the court house and on the green, where gasoline, fireless and canning cookers were in operation for several hours. Rev 0 A Phillips spoke to the gathering in a very appropriate manner, emphasizing the deep inter H Singleton and J B Alsbrook are at the head, was started up this j week, and the whir of the various machines is like music to those of Kingstree's citizens who like to see the old town pushing forward. The new plant is equipped with a high power gasoline engine for operating the machinery, which consists of a large four-sided combina- ? tion planer and moulding machine, shaper, rip, cut-off and band saws, 1 lathe, re8aw,etc, all of the latest and j best designs in their particular class. J For several weeks a part of the ( machinery of the plant has been temporarily operated by a small ] gasoline engine for the manufacture j of tobacco hogsheads, but with the large new engine and the setting up of additional machinery and a com- < petent force of mechanics, the plant ' is now prepared to do almost any : erature on all domestic science proD-;; lems. Miss Edwards has recently! equipped- herself with an automo-! bile, which enables her to get over ( the county in the interest of her work more frequently than with a horse and buggy. New Plant Starts Up, i The wood-working machine shop of the Kingstree Manufacturing and Construction Co, of which Messrs C kind of wood work. Col. O. T. Hall Dead. Lake City, August 23: ? Col 0 T j Hall, one of the largest property holders and most progressive men of Lake City, died this morning at 2 o'clock. His death was quite a shock ] to his friends here, as he had been sick only about ten days and it was not generally known that his illness , was of a serious nature. , Col Hall was born in Pittsylvania < county,Virginia, and moved to Lake ' City 15 years ago, where he built i the large Star warehouse,which was the first permanent step toward the large tobacco market Lake City has sfnce become. Through good management his business interests have increased until he accumulated a large amount of property. Senator E C Epps made an interesting talk on the value of the work and the necessity of co-operation on i the part of parents in offering every encouragement and facility to their children in carrying on the work as members of the various clubs of the county. Miss Edwards, whose efforts are indefatigable in making the work a success in this county, was complimented very highly by the assistant State agent. Miss Huffington, upon the excellent work of her clubs and j the enthusiasm she puts forth. Miss Huffington was especially pleased | with and commented in a very com-' plimentary manner upon Miss Edwards' office here, which is also a rest room for ladies from the country when in town shopping and a : headquarters for members of her! clubs and school teachers.
