The Great White Light We are not adverting our local electriclplant or praising the merits of any plant in particular when we , say that we would like to see every residency in Kingstree lighted by electricity. Every business house, . work shop and professional office should also be supplied with the light that never fades. Yes, and we venture a little further, we would like to see electric lighting wire strung out to every farm house in the county. The day of the tallow candles has passed; the old coal oil lamps are in tneir decendency, electricity is rapidly replacing them. The old fashioned hand lantern is going, too, its place being taken by little storage batteries, inventions that one can carry conveniently in his vest or hip pocket when not in use. Electricity should be no more expensive today than the oil lamp or tallow candle, while its effectiveness is increased a thousand fold. The way of the modern world is lighted by electric rays at the mere pressing of a button or the shifting of a switch. Let's modernize. Let's make a continuous current necessary. Let's light up. How About It? What has this town ever done for you? It has fed you, and clothed you, and housed you, and given you employment, and kept the wolf from your door for these many years. It has done more. It has furnished you recreation, and enjoyment, and has guided you safely over many of the stones that beset the pathway of life. It has praised your good deeds and has thrown the mantle of charity over your questionable ones. It has been, and is. your home. But what have you done for the town? You are making your money here, but where are you spending it? Are you buying goods from the local dealer, who pays taxes and otherwise contributes liberally to the upkeep of the community and your home, or are you sending your money away to some catalogue house that wouldn't lend you a five cent piece to save your soul from purgatory? And now you have reached the point where we want you to stop and think, and think hard, and to a sane, sensible and patriotic purpose. Who will be the "Beauty Queen" of the County Fair? For purposes of "safety first" always look a mule in the face. No man is so poor but he may give unto others, though it be noth ing more than a smile. Rev Harold Thomas has declined the call to the rectorate of the Episcopal church of the Holy Comforter, Sumter, and will remain at Florence. "About three month ago when I was suffering from indigestion which caused headache and dizzy spells and made me feel tired and despondent, I began taking Chamberlain's Tablets," writes Mrs Geo Hon, Macedon, N Y. "This medicine proved to be the very thing I needed, as one day's treatment relieved me greatly. I used two bottles of Chamberlain's Tablets and they rid me of this trouble." Obtainable everywhere. We are still having plenty of rain in these parts. It is fine on late crops. Miss Lettie Waters is visiting at Mr Stanid Coker's at Hebron this week. Tobacco sales are not so good at the Olanta warehouses today. Farmers are making grievous complaints, and some are hauling their tobacco home again. Governor Manning Monday respiled the death sentence of Joe Malloy.a negro, from August 18 to Sep- i tember 29, so that the case can be J heard by the Board of Pardons. Mai- j loy was convicted from Marlboro countv during the July, 1915, term j of court for the murder of Prentiss! Moore Thanksgiving day, 1910. He! had had two trials and the case had been reviewed by the State and Federal supreme courts. Sensational affidavits have been filed with Governor Manning implicating two white men in the murder, which, if true, j absolves Malloy from guilt. V ? Suttons Sittings. Nominations for the prettiest young lady in Williamsburg county are in order. Fill out the coupon and bring or mail it to "Chairman Beauty Queen" Committee, Box 127, Kingstree. Do it now. Olanta Observations. It is well to tie to the man who warms up in the interest of his home town. There are no icicles on him. Every man is appreciated in some way or another; the grouch or knocker, for instance, when he takes his leave. The heart and the mind make the man, but the pocket book greases his way through life. Ease us along with that past due subscription. We note that a Boston physician advises the human race to go barefoot. That, we presume, includes everybody but the Boston physician. Our spiritual advisers tell us that every human being is put on earth for some definite purpose, but hanged if we can find any possible excuse for the bloke who is too lazy to work. Pretty, accomplished young ladies are always in demand, if for nothing more than to brighten the tired eyes of an old bachelor, but just now we want them for a more noble purpose, that of winning glory for our county and State Fairs. Wanted? On and after September 1, | a few table-boarders. Good fare. Rates reasonable. Apply to Mrs M L Allen.
