Chas Becker, the ex-lieutenant of
police in New York, has lost out in
his last chance before the Unifed
States supreme court and has been
resentenced to be electrocuted on
July 28 for the murder of Rambler
Herman Rosenthal.

the Sayville (L I) wireless station
because of alleged neutrality violations.
It is one of the two high power
stations maintaining direct communication
between the United
States and Germany.

Hon J Belton Watson, former
member of the House of Representatives
from Anderson county, a
prominent and successful farmer,
died at his home near Anderson
Saturday, aged 62 years. Death
was due to heart trouble.

Mr E M Whaley, a prominent citizen
of Charleston and for some years
a State Senator from Charleston
oountv. died there last Saturday. Mr
Whaley had served as Clerk of the
civil and criminal court at Charleston.
He was 75 years of age.

Monday,Governor Manning granted
a parole to Bob Dobson, a white
man, convicted before the January,
1915, court for Spartanburg county
for burglary and sentenced to serve
seven years on the chaingang or in
the penitentiary. The parole was
granted for six months, that opportunity
may be given Dobsor. to iip^
prove his health. Dobson is said to
be suffering with pellagra and incapacitated
for work.

At New York yesterday Harry
Kendall Thaw was declared sane by
a jury which for nearly three weeks
had listened to testimony given in
the supreme court there before
Justice Peter Hendrick. Forty-eight
minutes .were consumed and two
ballots were taken in reaching a
verdict*. Tomorrow morning Justice
Hendrick will announce whether the
commitment upon which Thaw was
incarcerated in the State Hospital
for the Criminal Insane at Mattea
wan shall be vacated, thereby giving
to the slayer of Stanford White the
liberty for which he has fought in
the courts for nine years.

The third annual convention of
the Wesley Bible Class Federation
of the South Carolina Methodist
conferences, to be held at Spartanburg
the 19th, 20th and 21st of this
month, will in all probability be the
-largest religious gathering ever held
in South Carolina. Members of the
' various Sunday-school classes of
Methodist churches throughout the
State will gather to the number of
upward of 2,000. Speakers of national
prominence in Methodist Sunday-school
work will address the
sessions. An elaborate programme
has been arranged for the occasion

delightful entertainment Tuesday j
afternoon, when little Ralph Mc-1
Knight celebrated his eleventh birthday.
Promptly at 3:30 p. m. they all
began playing games, which were
enjoyed by each and every one. At
4:30 they were invited into the back
yard, where, in the shade of the
beautiful, wide-spreading branches
; of a sycamore tree, little Margaret
McKnight and Florence Harrington
served an ice course and Mary Frances
Harrington served a sweet
course. After enjoying this to the
fullest extent the boys indulged in
an exciting ball game, while the
little girls played with dolls. At
6:30 the little tots realized the sad
i but true fact, "'Tis time to go
home." May Ralph live to see many
happy returns of the day, and while
; journeying through life may each
i mile-stone he passes be attended by
i health, happiness and prosperity.
Miss Leona McKnight returned
- home Saturday, after a delightful
i outing of two weeks, accompanied
! by her friend and our school teacher,
Miss Lessie Strange.
; Miss Letha Moore is spending
I some time with her grandfather,
i Mr W P McKnight took his first
load of tobacco to the Kingstree
market today.

here, or at least just one or two.
