ALONG THE MAIL ROUTE. Items of Interest Gathered 'Twlxt Rbems and Rome. Rhems, May 17: ? Miss Marie Eaddy, who has been teaching at Good Hope, near Carver's Bay postoffice, is at home here for vacation, her school having closed a few days ago. Her many friends are glad to have her with them again. Miss Lula McKie, who taught the Barnes' school near here last session, was on her way to the railway sta tion at Morrisville last Tuesday, ac-,1 companied by Mr Luther Johnson of Nesmith. en route to her home at Meriwether, when, as they were nearing the station, Mr Johnson's spirited animal became frightened at an automobile and ran away and the buggy "turned turtle" with its occupants. Fortunately, however, both escaped with slight bruises and fluttering hearts, a demolished buggy being the most serious damage resulting. Mr G G Broadway went to Andrews Wednesday afternoon on business. Mr Jas D Munnerlyn had business in Georgetown Monday. Mr Geo E Grier spent Sunday in Florence. _ Mr Lamar Johnson of Florence spent some time in our midst last week. Mr A B Edwards filled his regular "appointment" in Kingstree Sunday. Lots of rain fell in this locality last Tuesday and Wednesday. The streams are much swollen and many places in the road were washed out, making traveling dangerous for a few days, but the county authorities were promptly notified and responded with a crew of convicts and now the route is in first class condition. "Ye scribe" is unab'e to name the noted generals of the European conflict, also those of the Mexican struggle, but as to our country it is easy to tell who is at the helm of , * the Ship of State. President Woodrow Wilson is a cool-headed man for peace. General Green is the active commander, especially of this immediate section, at present and the farmers are uniting their efforts and preparing for battle. Charleston county leads in the dispensary sales of intoxicating liquors for the month of April, according to the report of Dispensary Auditor L j L Bultman. The total sales for Charleston were $47,805.50, with Richland county next, with sales amounting to $47,303.15. The total sales of the State for the month of April were $228,754.77, with an operating expense of $43,662.15. The dispensaries of the city of Columbia sold $45,103.15 for April and had an operating expense of $2,565.99. The dispensary at Eastover sold $2,199.20 duringthe month and had an operating expense of $192.20. Contest in Expression, Miss Winnie McLaulin first and Miss Helen Wilder second. Contest in Oratory, Mr Barnie Williams first and Mr Llewellyn Pope second. In the county contest at Kingstree, Miss Bertie Scurry won second place, Miss Winnie McLaulin third.and Mr Barnie Williams fourth. A very interesting play, "A Southern Cinderella," was well presented by the teachers on April 23, and greatly enjoyed by all present. The present officers of the Francis Marion Literary society recently elected are: Llewellyn Pope, president; Mattie Owens, vice president; Barnie Williams, secretary; Lillian Cribb, treasurer; D I Wilson, first censor; DuRant Rhem, second censor;Winnie McLaulin, literary editor. The girls have organized a basket ball club, and some have received compliments as being expert players. The commencement exercises will be held from May 28 to 31. So this is a free invitation extended to all. Petitions In Bankruptcy. Harry Riff, of Kingstree, Williamsburg county, yesterday filed a voluntary petition in bankruptcy in the United States District court here.
