at Raleigh, N C, Saturday, after a
brief illness. He was 74 years old.

Judge Geo E Prince has ruled
that the "gallon-a-month" law does
not affect the ordering of alcohol by
druggists for medicinal use. The
case will in all probability be taken
to the supreme court.

The total of British casualties in
the war since the beginning of hostilities
up to April 11 is 139,347
men, according to an announcement
made in the House of Commons by
Harold J Tennant, Under Secretary
of War.

Nelson W Aldrich, former United
States Senator from Rhode Island,
and for years prominent in Republican
political circles, died at his
home at Providence FYiday of last
week. Heart disease was the cause
of Mr Aldrich'8 death.

Robert Felder, colored, and two
mules were struck and instantly kill
ed by lightning Tuesday afternoon
just below Orangeburg on the place
of Mr George Dukes. Felder had
Bounted one mule to go home when
the lightning struck. There was no
tree or building within two hundred
yards.

Baron Herbert de Reuter, managing
director of Reuter's Telegram
Co, was found dead Monday at his
home near Reigate, Surrey. A discharged
revolver lay near his body
and the authorities declare there is
little doubt he committed suicide.
Baron de Reuter was prostrated by
the death of his wife last Thursday.
Her body is in the home awaiting
interment. Their only son is in the
army.
Every man travels in his own

The telegram reads:

grounded cruiser Asama. The reported
mines are nothing but Bmall
buoys showing the place of anchors
and works of flotation. The encampments
reported by the press are
fishing camps."
The Letter "E."
Some one has advanced the opinion
that the letter "e" is the most
unfortunate character in the English
alphabet, because it is never out of
I danger and in hell all the time. Foi
some reason he overlooked the fortunates
of the letter, so we will call
his attention to the fact that "e" is
never in war and always in peace.
