Tbe Banishment of Booze. Rent by strife that is reddening its rivers with blood, Europe presents, upon at least one subject, a remarkable picture of unanimity: /-I 1 T7? 1 ] A. A-.'-. I IjUermany anu Ejii&iaiiu, Austria auu Russia, and even one time gay France, are all agreed that booze must go. And even Uncle Sam is becoming an ally in this crusade! Liquor has been decreed the one great outlaw and pirate of the war. It took the war to demonstrate that there was no place for it in the conservation of nations and their commercial expansion. Omitting moral and physical aspects as affecting individuals and aggregates of individuals, the business side of it has awakened rulers and leaders of men to the national danger in booze, and they have | issued their decrees against it. The liquor problem was brought home to emperors, kings and statesmen when they studied the fighting * qualities of their men; the evidence stood out in bold relief before them. France took the preliminary step in the ban put upon absinthe. Russia went all the way, giving up millions of revenue in the abolition of vodka and the closing of the saloons. Germany and Austria are drawing the reins tighter upon the liquor ti affic, while in England, where King George and Lord Kitchener have set the example by personal and family abstinence, the tavern and the saloon are making their last stand, European sentiment against booze has struck deeper than a desire to win momentary yictory on the bat hundred thousand dollars' worth of bonds for building permanent highways in Union county was defeated in today's election. About 50 per cent of the qualified electors voted. .. . * . I tlefield. It has gone back to the question of the victories of peace? the victory of the counting house, the corporation office, the shop, of commerce in all its extent and va ried aspects, n liquor manes a poor soldier, a poor battalion or regiment how much more easily does it make a poor fighter in the business ranks? How much more will it deplete and i injure the effectiveness of the great commercial army which at last embodies the very life of the nation? Moral aspects there are, it is true, ( and they have their great weight. But these, at last, must be determined and applied by the individual. It is evidence of undermining the life of the nation itself, that has produced the awakening. The European war has shown more than anything else that there is no place for booze in national development and growth; and upon the evidence its banishment has been decreed. The horrible blood shed of which this war has been productive is deplored of all nations and all peoples. But if the outcome of it shall be the banishment of the bottle, it will have rendered so j?reat a service to humanity that the blood will not have been spilled in vain.?Atlanta Constitution. Notice.
