Lee and Jackson.
Field Marshal Sir John French,
in command of the British army in
France, is quoted by the Associated
Press correspondent as paying a
splendid tribute to the South's
matchless leaders, Robert E Lee and
4'Stonewall" Jackson. According
to the newspaper correspondent the
remarks of this distinguished military
authority were:
Few Americans probably are as
familiar with the campaigns of the
American Civil war as is Sir John.
He has made a thorough study of
them, and from them he has drawn
lessons which he has found helpful
in France. He mentioned Stonewall
Jackson. "To me Gen Jackson was
more like Cromwell than any other
leader of history," said the British
commander. "A heroic, martial
figure whose wonderful career came
to the happy close a soldier desires
in the hour of victory. I have followed
all his marches and battles
with unflagging admiration. He had
the religious exaltation of Cromwell,
his dash and determination and his
ready strategy, and the genius of inspiring
his troops with his own indomitable
spirit of energy.
"But of all your commanders
Robert E Lee, in his patience, his
resource, his poise, his soundness of
judgment and his possession of the
qualities of high command in all
emergencies, is foremost in my opinion."
It is significant that no mention
is made of any general on either
side save the peerless Confederate
military geniuses, Lee and Jackson.

We don't know much about the
Colonels Governor Manning has appointed
on his staff, but if they and
the rest of the Lieutenant Colonels
are men like Allen Bradham, of
Manning; Hugh Oliver, of Georgetown;
Wigfall Cheatham, of Edgefield,
and last, but not least, Jim
McCutchen.of Williamsburg, he has
chosen wisely and well. We congratulate
both Governor Manning
and our friends named above,knightly
gentlemen all.
From the executive committee of
the Reunion of South Carolina Veterans
to be held in Columbia this
month Governor Manning has re
ceived a letter requesting that all
the dispensaries in the city of Columbia
be closed Thursday and Friday,
April 22 and 23, during the
time of the Reunion." We hope
that the Governor will not only
close the dispensaries during the
Reunion, but that he will do everything
else in his power to comply
with the spirit of the veterans' request
and thus help to make this
the grandest and happiest Reunion
that has ever been held in our State.
Having just launched the "Pennsylvania",
the biggest battleship
afloat, Uncle Sam has now let the
contract for the largest and most
powerful submarine ship that has
ever been built. In point of size and
power of destructiveness the "Schley " j
is far superior to anything of the i
kind ever attempted. It is the only
submarine yet designed to cross the
Atlantic, so far as is known to naval
experts. When completed, twenty-j'

The historic flock of geese whose
cackling saved ancient Home from
imminent capture have their.[ feat

news dispatch sea gulls are credited
with saving a British battleship
from being torpedoed, their sudden
flight giving the alarm of the enemy's
proximity.
Have you noticed that of late
years Senator Ben Tillman has quit
boasting that he is "the daddy" of
the dispensary system in South
Carolina? Wonder if in his declining
years the old fellow, who so
boldly and defiantly flouted the expressed
will of a majority of the
voters of South Carolina, does not realize
the awful consequences wrought
by that tyrannical act?

fighting prowess. And we have a
sneaking notion of the kind ourself.
