Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It has not fallen on that date since 1858 and will occur upon it but once more in this century ?1926. * Dr W J Haselden, Messrs V G Ar-! nette and H H Brown of Cades were y in Kingstree Monday on business in connection with the proposed new school building at that place. ^B The pretty weather of the past I few weeks brought new life to all lines of business. Pity for it to be B interrupted even temporarily by the present inclement "spell." The local bakers, we understand, have not raised the price of loaf, bread. This is very commendable! on their part and we hope they may be able to maintain their position. Sunday was St Valentine's day, j the patron saint of lovers and chil- J dren, and many of them did not fail to celebrate that good old saint's ' anniversary, although it fell on a| Sunday. Judge I W Bowman of Orangeburg has informed Clerk of Court Britton that as next Mondav, February 22,is Washington's birth-day and a legal holiday, he will not be here to open court until Tuesday, the following day. The Record does not publish letters or communications of any kind not signed by the writer, so why waste stamps? The writer's name will not be published, ordinarily, if he or she objects to the name appearing in the paper. Among those from this community attending the Southern Missionary institute of the Presbyterian church at Charlotte, N C, this week were: Rev P S McChesney, Messrs Hugh McCutchen, W M Vause, P S Courtney and W A McCrea. Mr W E Snipes informs us that he is going to plant 90 acres of tobacco at Smoaks, in Colleton county, where no market has yet been established, and as Kingstree is the most convenient market, it would be well for our warehousemen to look after this crop. Look at the little yellow label on the margin of the first page of your paper- the little slip bearing your name?and you can see whether or not you owe us anything. If the date is wrong, call at the office, or write us, and we will try to get the matter straight Mr J P Davis, who for the past few months has been a member of the popular firm of Davis & Fennell, left this morning for his home at Mullins. Mr Davis closed out his interest in the concern to his former partner, Mr H A Fennell, who will continue the business. Mr J B Gamble, who recently sucilnn R K Wallace as Masris trate of the Kingstree district, has appointed as his deputy Mr S A Nettles, formerly proprietor of the Kellahan hotel. Miss Mamie McLees, supervising teacher of rural schools, was confined to her room several days this week and was unable to meet a number of engagements connected with her work in the county. She has sufficiently recovered to meet ner engagements and will leave Kingstree with Miss Mary Eva Hite, State supervisor of rural schools, tomorrow morning. We have been requested to remind those who handle narcotics, of the Harrison act, which goes into effect March 1 next, and which f makes it unlawful for any one to ; deal in drugs containing more than a ' certain percentage of opium or j morphine or its derivatives, unless' such person, firm or corporation is registered with the Collector of Internal Revenue, who for this district is D C Heyward, Columbia, S C. Comes another unsigned missive j from New Zion, the only mark of ! identification of the writer being1 the appellative "Good Luck". We should be pleased to give "Good Luck" space as a correspondent; but, as we have hinted once or twice before, it is contrary to our rules to publish any sort of communication 1 without the real name of the writer accompanying it, not necessarily for publication, but for our own protection. To break this rule ir might end with bad luck to start it with "Good Luck". Sunday Mrs W G Gamble cele-j brated her twentieth wedding anniversary. At least, her friends made her celebrate it.for it was a surprise to Mrs Gamble. She had not anticipated the occasion. Her many friends in Kingstree planned the affair and about twenty-four ladies gathered at the home of the Misses Jacobs about 3:30 p. m. and proceeded to Mrs Gamble's home. Miss Mamie Jacobs acted as hostess and served refreshments. The gifts received by Mrs Gamble were numerous and beautiful. On Thursday, February 4, we had gone to press, printed and mailed the town and Kingstree R F D lists to our subscribers, when we learned that Mr L W McCants had died suddenly in the Sheriff's office. Knowing that he was well known throughout the county, we stopped our press and made an announce ment of his death. We felt that this act was in keeping with up-todate business methods, and certainly regret to understand that some of our readers were displeased when they learned that this notice appeared in some papers and not in all. Saturday the editor was the grateful recipient from his kind and thoughtful friends. Mr and Mrs D E McCutchen of "Old Indiantown", of a generous gift of home-made butter. Now,there is home-made butter and home-made butter, but this is in the nsplus ultra class?nothing better. Daintily packed in delicate tissue paper and of a rich golden color, fragrant as with breezes redolent of 1 cowslips and clover, its delightful 1 aroma and delicious flavor were sug- | gestive of well-kept Jerseys, brows- , ing knee-deep in buttercups and dai- j sies. By a vote of 27 to 13 the State Senate tabled the amendment to devolve the duties of cotton warehouse commissioner upon the Commissioner of Agriculture, now held by ex-Senator John L McLaurin. On a yes and no vote Senator Epps yoted against the amendment; that is, to let McLaurin continue to hold his job. The office of warehouse commissioner carries an appropriation of $17,337. The bill to create a State board of charities and corrections has passed the Senate. As we under stand it, this bill carries an appropriation of over $10,000 in the way of salaries, etc. When will this lavish expenditure of the State's money stop? On account of Governor Manning's objecting to Attorney General Peeples' appointment of Fred Dominick, Blease's former law partner and twice or more his campaign manager, and the Governor's political "enemy," as he considered him, an item of $2,000 was included in the appropriation bill for legal advice for the Governor, or "so much as needed." This brought on a spirited fight in the House, but the item went to third reading by a vote of two, the vote being 45 to 47. The 50-car bill was defeated in the Senate yesterday by a vote of 24 to 15. Rhems Recollections.
