Auditor's Notice
For the purpose of taking tax returns
for the year 1915. the Auditor's office
will be open from January 1 to February
20. The law requiring a penalty of
fifty percent upon all returns made after
the above dates will be strictly enforced.
All purchases and sales of real
estate, personal property, polls, commutation
tax and dog tax must be returned.
All males between the age of 21
and 60 years, inclusive, are liable to Poll
and Commutation tax.

Farmers Making Good Headway.

Nesmith, February 15:?Farmers
of this section are highly pleased
with the weather for the past week,
and they are making good use of it
getting ready for the new crop.
In spite of the cold, rainy weather
the first of the year, the tobacco
plants are getting up very nicely
through this section.
We are glad to know that the W
0 W camp at Nesmith is beginning
to take on new life. Several of the
young men around here have joined
and will ride the goat next meeting.
Lookout, boys, "Billy" is a "crackerjack."
Mr E B McElveen of Cartersville
spent several days here last week
with his father, Mr A F McElyeen.
Miss Muriel Chandler has returned
to her home at Benson, after
spending several days with her sister,

j Mr Maxie Hemingway purchased
a very fine mule from a live stock
company a few days ago, but is
finding great difficulty in managing
him.
The young folk of this vicinity enjoyed
an entertainment given by
Miss Lena McElveen Friday evening
at her hospitable home. The hostess
met her friends at the door and
ushered them into the parlor, which
was beautifully decorated witn nya-1
cinths, ferns and numerous other
lovely flowers and rare exotics. The 11
time was pleasantly passed away1;
playing games, and music furnished
by Misses Lena Haddock and Ethel
Seybt enhanced much the enjoyment
of the occasion.

spent the week-end last week at Mr
W J Cooper's.

the Nexsen School Improvement association
a nice library has been
procured for this school, comprising
a ten-dollar book-case and thirty dollars'
worth of books. This is a great
addition to the school and we feel
proud that we have been able to
place a library in the community.
Every child should have access to a
collection of good,instructive books,
as these are just as important to
them as their school books.

DECLARES THAT RIGHT KIND
RUN IN WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
IS HIGHLY PROFITABLE.
The following remarks were made
by E H Burritt of LeRoy, N Y, recently
at a public meeting of advertising
men and advertising agents.
As an expert in the art of adept and
adequate advertising, we dare say
he has few superiors, having been
for many years advertising manager
for a big mercantile concern. It

of our merchants and business men
to read carefully his views on advertising
as expressed in the following:

In a very large measure the future
of the country merchant will
be determined by his ability to grasp
the idea of the great importance of ;
the right kind of advertising in such ^
weekly papers as may be available.
He has been extremely slow to see
the direction from which comes his

greatest opportunity. He has wasted
vast sums of money on what he has
caned advertising.
Today you will find many country
merchants using the same copy several
weeks in succession and complaining
that advertising does not
pay. We believe this is due to
laziness fully as much as to ignorance.
It takes carefully prepared
copy to be worthy of publication
and repeating.
Not infrequently you will see advertisements
that make you think
the author is advertising to make a
reputation for himself by trying to
be funny. Jokes have their places,
but it is not in copy that is written
to sell merchandise.
Those who appreciate the value
of advertising that rings true have
been pleased with the nation-wide
effort that is being made to stamp
out untruthful advertising. If you
tell a customer, over the counter,
the absolute truth year after year
he has confidence in you and will
stand by you with his patronage.
This holds good in your advertising
as well, and the community will
read your copy as a matter of education
as well as interest to the end
that they will be better buyers on
account of the truthful information
found week after week. If there is
ever any doubt, give the public the
benefit thereof. In doing this year
after year you will unconsciously
build a reputation that will stand
greater financial stress than a reserve
bank account.
The spasmodic advertiser becomes
quickly discouraged and will tell
you that newspaper advertising does
not pay. Th^ hardest rock in a
stone quarry is not broken by a few
mighty and rapid strokes, but yields
only after a continuous and steady
stroke by the patient worker. The
same principle holds good in advertising.
The man who does thor

week after week and year after year,
will win. This does not necessarily
mean that he will always use the
same size space, but that he willhave
something interesting for his
customers 52 times during the year.
Much advertising space is wasted
through lack of vital knowledge
about the thing you are trying to
advertise. "Know your goods" is
an old but very important truth.
The advertiser very frequently
makes- the mistake of trying to
make flowery language hide his ignorance
of the thing he is trying to

goods he should condense his
thoughts as much as possible, mak-.
ing each statement clear beyond ar
doubt.
