While slowly convalescing, the editor of The Record is still quite a sick man, requiring the services of a trained nurse both day and night. The unremitting and indefatigable ' attentions and kindnessess shown him throughout his illness by all of the people of the town will never be forgotton and the only return he can make is to pray that the good God will bless and prosper them throughout their lives. Mr C A Maull. advertising manager of the A C L R R Co, delivered a very interesting and instruc- j tive address to the citizens and busi- i ness men of Kingstree Wednesday j morning on the subject of agricul-j tural and industrial pursuits in thisl . section. Mr Maull has been engaged in | managing advertising campaigns for! the past twenty-five years, a greater portion of which work has been in connection with railroad activities, and he has accumulated a vast ; fund of information as a result of travels, which have covered a considerable portion of the world. 9 His visit to Kingstree was made upon an invitation extended by Mr Thomas McCutchen, president of the Kingstree Board of Trade, the 1 object being to inaugurate a comprehensive and effective campaign looking towards the more thorough , development of this particular section of the State. 1 Mr Maull, in the coarse of his remarks, stated that the conditions ( incident to the profitable application of agricultural pursuits in this locality were equal to, if not superior to, those of any other section of the country. We have, he states, a soil that will will grow any kind of farm produce to be found in America, with the great advantage of a growing season of at least ten months. It is his conviction that careful and intelligent industry will lengthen I the growing season to even twelve months in each year. Why, then, he asks, do we not take seize upon this great natural advantage, and develop our section by diversification, intensive farming, and more intelligent effort? Mr Maull stressed the point that every farmer should produce upon his farm everything that is required for the table. He stated that no section could hope to acquire indtv pendence so long as they lived out of a "tin can." And, he said, neither can a community hope to become independent so long as they violate one of the fundamental principles of economics as we have heretofore done, which is, total reliance upon one crop for our livelihood. Those who insist upon this method of I 1 1m tKa fil-iit t(1 Bllffpr iai UJllJK. will Vt VIIV 1UOI VV I during a period of economic stress, and will be the last to recover their normal balance. Mr Maull referred to many section of the United States that had come under his observation, and toid his hearers what had been accomplished in these places. In California, a higher state of cultivation has been reached than in any other part of the known world, and these results have been wrought, not by a superior quality of soil or other natural resources, but by hard work, and intelligent and comprehensive effort. Upon the conclusion of his remarks Mr Maull explained that the ACL R R Co intended getting out a booklet to be used in inducing some of the farmers of the northern sections of the country to come 1.0 this State. Ten representative town will be selected by the company as centers about which the advantages of the farm lands will be set forth, and Kingstree has been given an opportunity to become one of the ten. The booklet will consist of about 32 pages, and will cost $1100. The company will subscribe $200 toward this fund, and the sections represented will subscribe the balance. Mr Maull explained that Kingstree as a town would not figure in the advertising, as this scheme was in tended to develop the country districts alone, the town receiving its benefits indirectly. The proposition appealed to the Board of Trade, and it was forthwith moved and carried that steps be taken at once to raise the necessary funds to include this section in the advertising-campaign. Mr Maull.upon invitation, said that he would be very glad to come to Kingstree at any time that might best suit the farmers of this county to gather here, and discuss with them methods of increasing the efficiency of farms, diversification, etc. It was decided by the Board of Trade to arrange foi such a gathering of the farmers and business men of the county, of which specific action will be taken in the near future. Wltb Our Advertisers. The writer of this has never experienced greater pleasure in calling attention of the readers of The Record to its advertising columns. At the beginning of the year we suggested to the business people of Kingstree and Williamsburg county to "start the new year right" by patronizing the home paper?the only newspaper printed in the county. They have liberally responded to thl suggestion and, as we have always done, we still urge our subscribers to patronize those who advertise in our columns, because we believe they represent the best interests of the town, the county and the people whose patronage they thus solicit. In this issue we invite your attention most especially to the page ad of H D Reddick, with reference to a special sale being conducted by Jas D Ray & Co of Raleigh,N C, and the page ad of Mr N Shuman, who is also conducting a special sale under the management of the A G Blotchy Co of Spartanburg. Messrs Jenkinson Bros Co, who need no special reference here, are carrying a half-page ad in this paper that will doubtless interest their numerous friends and all who are looking for good goods at lowest prices. Messrs Davis & Fennell, the shoe firm, have an attractive ad in this issue,as has also the King Hardware Co, a new firm composed of some of the best known business men in Kingstree. The Williamsburg Hardware Co, one of the old and reliable firms of the town, also the Kingstree Hardware Co, are retaining their old spaces on front page. If you are ailing, see the Kingstree Drug Co; they can cure you. Read their new ad. To the banks of Kingstree also we feel grateful for their liberal patronage and are pleased to have them as advertising patrons at this season. In short, there is not an advertiser in The Record, big or little, that we do not appreciate, and promise our best efforts to please at all times and. so far as possible, make his or their ad attractive and remunerative. lonslipatlon and Indigestion. "Ihave used Chamberlain's Tablets and must say they are the best I have ever used for constipation and indigestion. My wife also used them for indigestion and they did her good," writes Eugene S Knight, Wilmington, N C.
