"In men whom men condemn as ill, I find so much of goodness still; In men whom men pronounce divine, 1 find so much of sin and blot? I hesitate to draw the line Between the two?where God has not." THURSDAY. DEC. 31. 1914. I To get the legal tender these times is a tough proposition. A poor outlook for good roads next year with no convicts to work them. Should McDuftie county be ratified by the Legislature it will give ns forty-five counties in this State. The inauguration of Governor Manning takes place January 19, 1915. the birthday of Robert E I^ee. The lx-tter the, day the better the deed.?Columbia Daily fie<vrd. On Wednesday, December 30, Governor Blease added fifty-five more to his list of pardons and paroles, making a total of 1,544 since he has been in office. There are now only one hundred and fortynine convicts left in the penitentiary and on the State farms and chaingangs. With seven years of plenty hehind them and over eight thousand bales of cotton in excess of last year's crop; with an unusually big crop of provisions made and nearly a million dollars on deposit in the hanks of the county, we can see no reason why the people of Williamsburg county should lie suffering or even hard up. The entente cordialc between Uncle Sam and .John Bull seems a bit strained, but it will probably amount to nothing more than a game of diplomatic logomachy. Uncle Sam is not spoiling for a fight and John Bull has both hands ! pretty full already, although it has always been his fate to fight Uncle Sum when he was engaged in war with other nations. Many i>eople remark in a rather complaining way that Christmas passed off so quietly that it "seemed just like Sunday." Well, why shouldn't Christmas not only seem, but be like Sunday, if observed in the proper spirit? Surely those who celebrate the anniversary of our Savior's birth would not have a fight, or a fire, or a murder or two on such an occasion. So, by all means, let us be thankful that "we had a quiet Christmas," without noise and excitement. Hie whole country is infested with a horde of vagrants and hog gars. It is no unusual occurrence, when one's front door Ix-il rings to find from one to four husky tramps demanding a "hand-out.'* There should be a stop put to the visitations of these parasites. Down with the hoboes and vagrants. They are not looking for work. If it is offered they will side-step it. They are, most of them, out of work l*eeause there is no work in them. We venture the opinion that the * *T *i 3 i... newspapers ot tne tnnea oiuies, in this stupendous European war, have spent more money and received less real news therefor than ever before in their experience. Every day we are confronted with glaring head-lines, followed by column after column of "war news," and after wading through it all one is no wiser as to the real state of things than before he began. The pen may be mightier than the sword, as Bulwer avers, hut the censor is mightier than the pen. * STATE and GENERAL K * TOPICS * Governor Blease has appointed W E Free Clerk of Court c f Bamberg county, vice C B Free, d, ceased. XXX Mary Duffie, an aged nurse, was shot and instantly killed by Richard R Peeples, a white man, at Furman, Hampton county, last Saturday. XX X Julius L McCallum, cashier of the First National Bank of Sumter, was found dead in his bed Saturday, his death being probably due to apoplexy. XXX Sheriff Hendrix Rector of Greeu?! !? ^ i V w/,f I vine county, was bchuubij, >1 uui fatally, hurt Sunday afternoon when his automobile turned turtle and threw him out. XXX Manyard Way was shot and killed by J A Wyman Monday near Bamberg. Mr Wyman is said to have shot in self-defense after having been attacked by Way. X X X Marie Gays,a seven-year-old child, was run down and killed by a street car at Greenville Wednesday of last week while she was attempting to cross the street. The horrified mother saw her little girl ground to death beneath the wheels of the car. XXX General L Martin, a Jyoung man living nine miles out from Augusta, Ga, died Sunday morning from the effects, it is reported, of a poisonous concoction given him on Christmas day by his friends as a joke, telling him it was wine. The victim of this ghastly humor lingered in agony for forty-eight hours and died miserably. He leaves a bride of a few months. XXX Justice Lamar, of the United States Supreme court, has granted an appeal from the refusal of the Federal District court of Northern Georgia to release on habeas corpus proceedings Leo M Frank, sentenced to be hanged January 22, 1915, for the murder of Mary Phagan, the little Atlanta factory operative. The granting of this appeal carries automatically a stay of sentence and Frank will not be hanged January 22, whatever the outcome of the hearing. m ?? THE BEST POLICY. McCormick, December 29:?By an overwhelming vote, 619 to 97, the promoters of the "McDuffie" county movement won out in the election held today in the portions of Abbeville, Edgefield and Greenwood counties affected. The proposed new county territory in each old county gave more than the twothirds in favor of "McDuffie" county, which, after expected favorable action by the General Assembly, will be South Carolina's forty-fifth county, the Palmetto State's "baby." This town will be the county seat. The vote in detail, as reported, is as follows: Abbeville, 375 for and 61 - 1-1 1 /? t 1 1 AO J J OO against; rxigeneia, i?o xor anu co against; Greenwood, 51 for and 13 against. This is regarded as a great victory. It comes ten years after the first election, which was also by fin overwhelming vote carried for the new county, which lost out on account of a very small error in the matter of territory, due to a slight inaccuracy in the survey. The territory this time has been accurately surveyed and the people of this territory now look confidently to the General Assembly for the formation of their much-needed and cherished new county. The fight has been long, hard and tedious, but everybody feels fully repaid for the part he contributed towards this overwhelming victory and the ultimate attainment of the formation of this new county.
