Lake City,December 1:?Our community
was saddened Friday evening
when it was learned that Henry
Horace, the nine months' infant son
i of Mr and Mrs B H Singletary, who
reside near Lake City, had succumbed
to a brief attack of pneumonia.
^ The little fellow was an unusually
bright and apparently healthy child,
and was beloved by every one, and
I his sudden deatn caused much sor|
row among us all. The burial
; service, conducted by Rev E P Eas|
terling, took place Sunday afternoon
{ at the Baptist church. Mr and Mrs
Singletary have the deepest sympathy
of their many friends.
The bazaar given by the Ladies'
,. Aid society of the Baptist church
Thanksgiving evening in Dr Courtney's
building was a decided success.
All kinds of lovely embroidered lini
en,little gifts appropriate for Christmas
presents, and household necessities
were offered and sold. The
Philathea class sold oysters and realized
a neat sum.
Thanksgiving day passed off very
quietly here; folk celebrated the occasion
mostly by "spending the day"
^ with friends, which meant an extra|jwordinary
dinner, and visiting friends
in nearby towns.
A large number or ioik spent

upon the Shriners' meet and like
wise "meat."

Miss Adelaide Rollins has returned
home, after a most delightful sojourn
with relatives in Virginia.
"Addie" seems to be exceedingly
fond of the mountains of Virginia,
or is it the mountaineers?
Miss Gladys Thames of Davis Station
spent the week-end with her
sister, Mrs P H Arrowsmith, returning
home Sunday afternoon.
Miss Blanche Stuckey is in Florence,
the guest of her cousin, Miss
Mildred Muldrow.

White Oak. December 1:?The
little two-year-old daughter of Mr i
and Mrs Waring Burrows was taken
suddenly seriously ill at the Burrows'
school house Saturday night, about
nine o'clock, while attending relig-1
ous services, and died a few hours'
later. Medical aid was secured as
quickly as possible, but to no avail, j
Its remains were laid to rest in the
cemetery at Rough Branch church
Monday afternoon, at 3 O'clock.'
Mr and Mrs Burrows have the sympathy
of their many friends.
Thanksgiving day passed off very
quietly here, except for the "bang,
bang" of the Nimrods' guns. "Ye
scribe" can boast of the appetite
that he had for Thanksgiving that'
the editor had hoped for him, but,
that is usually the way with a fel-1
low who has been sick for several,
weeks, end the most important part
of his "medicine" has been starvaj
tion.

Messrs Joseph Cantey and Buren
Harrington of Workman were here
a short while Wednesday morning,
and after their departure two of
our popular young ladies, Misses
Pauline Cantey and Alice Eaddy,
were also missing. They arrived at
home safe Sunday, however, after
spending the Thanksgiving holidays
very pleasantly with friends at
Workman.
A Thanksgiving social play was
very much enjoyed by the younger
set Thursday evening at the home
of Mr and Mrs John D Galloway.
Miss Blanche Tisdale of Kingstree
spent the latter part of the week
with friends in this vicinity.

several days last week with his
grandparents, Mr and Mrs R L McElveen,

Messrs Blainey and Johnnie Johnson
of Lake City spent Thanksgiving
day very pleasantly here with
friends.
Announcement is hereby made
that the prayer and song service
will be held every Friday evening
promptly at seven o'clock, and Sunday-school
will begin at three o'clock
p. m., Sundays, instead of four
o'clock as heretofore, at the White
Oak school house.
We are glad to report that, with
the exception of colds, fairly good

Sumter, November 30:?The Conference
of the Methodist Episcopal
church, South, as it has existed for
one hundred and twenty-nine years,
concluded its last session here this
afternoon.
There was little business to transact
tndav. The several committees
for the two Conferences were named.
Mr J Fuller Lyon was elected
treasurer of the Upper South Carolina
Conference and Mr Henry P
Williams, of Charleston, was elected
treasurer for the South Carolina
Conference.
Rev E 0 Watson continues as secretary
of the South Carolina and
Rev P B Wells was elected temporary
secretary of the Upper Conference.
A matter which excited considerable
interest- was a motion by Rev
A H Best and others to locate Rev S
A Nettles, on the ground of unacceptability.
Rev L F Beatty and
Rev P F Kilgo and others defended
Mr Nettles, while Rev Messrs A H
Best, J L Harley and J C Chandler
supported the motion for location.
The motion prevailed and Mr Nettles
is no longer a member of the Conference.
Bishop Denny announced the appointments
for 1915.

Guessing Contest Announced.

Truluck, of this place, advises your
correspondent that the recent contest
advertised in The Record, in
which a buggy, harness and saddle
were offered as prizes to the ones

guessing the nearest numoer 01
pounds of tobacco and prices paid
therefor on the Lake City tobacco
market, ?vas brought to a close yesterday,according
to the terms of the
contest, when the count was made
by the gentlemen mentioned in the
advertisement. It was found that
Alvin Godwin, a son of Mr J Ed Godwin,guessed
the nearest number and
was given the buggy; Miss Ruby
Brown of Leo guessed the second
nearest number and was awarded
the handsome set of harness, and Dr
T D Vassar of Bantford, Fla, came
third, receiving as his prize the saddle.
Mr Truluck advises us that in
Kingstree Miss Bessie Baker won
the buggy and Dr W L Taylor and
Alee Blakeley tied for the harness.

NEGRO RAPIST PARDONED.
Tarns Free Negro Convicted of
Atrocious Crime In Hampton.
Columbia, November 30: ? The
Governor has granted a full and
free pardon to Abraham Davis, a
Hampton county negro, who was
convicted in June, 1914, for rape
and sentenced to a life term in the
penitentiary.

J. H. Blackwell Defeated for
Mayor by S. B. Rodgers.
Lake City, December 1. Special:?
As a result of today's municipal
election, Mr J H Blackwell, the incumbent,was
defeated for Mayor by
a majority of 44 votes in favor of
Mr S B Rodgers. Much interest was
manifested. It was a source of much
regret to the Blackwell faction that
he should be defeated; on the other
