The first hot supper of the season
m was given at Gamble's cafe Friday
\ evening for the benefit of the Baptist
chirch. It was a very appetizing
spread and well patronized, the net
receipt.; being $52.
The local lodge of Knights of
Pythias met last night at their Castle
Hall and enjoyed an enthusiastic
meetin?. A large number were
present, and plans were formulated
for a big meeting in the near future.
Refreshments were served
after the lodge meeting.

Isaac Monsau.a white man of foreign
birth, was arrested here last
Saturday by Policeman Epps upon
advices received from the police department
of Fayetteville.N C, where
Monsau is wanted for larceny. The
prisoner is being held in the countyjail
here pending the result of his
counsels' efforts to secure habeas
corpus proceedings, which they are
endeavoring to obtain.

Miss Mae Elizabeth Burgess has
sent to a number of her little friends
and classmates a cleverly worded invitation
to a birthday party to be

we bespeak for the little lady a happy
occasion, and, if necessary, our:

Thaddeus Fulton, a young negro,;
for some time under (suspicion as a
clever thief, was bagged by Policeman
Epps Monday. In November,
1913,a double-barreled shot-gun be
longing to Mr L D Rodgers was
stolen from the latter's store, where
Britton & Hutson are now in business.
There was no clue as to the
identity of the thief,butOfficer Epps
was suspicious of Fulton and caught
him with the stolen gun Monday.
Fulton was sent to the chaingang
Tuesday for 30 days. The gun w^g
returned to Mr Rodgers.
Rev Harold Thomas of Florence
will conduct a mission at St Alban's
Episcopal church next week, beginning
Monday, November 16, and
closing Sunday night, the 22nd. Mr

Capt Robert F Jennings, United
States internal revenue collector,
; was in Kingstree last week pestering
! the merchants with reference to the
I new war tax stamps which will go
j into use throughout the United States
December 1. While here Capt Jen;
nings visited each merchant and inj
formed him just what articles in his
| line would have to be stamped with
; a special tax stamp if sold after November
30. The penalty fixed for
j the first violation of this new law is
a fine of $500 or six months in a Fed'
eral prison. We trust that the mer!
chants throughout Williamsburg
| county will acquaint themselves with
: th? nrovisions of this law insofar as
i it is applicable to their business and
; follow it to avoid trouble.
The first of the series of lyceum attractions
scheduled to take place
here during the winter was held at
; the school auditorium Tuesday night
before a small but appreciative audience.
This attraction was advertised

the violin solos by Miss Gailey showed
that she was a master with the

Lake City to Have Warehouse.
Columbia, November 11.?Acting
upon an opinion by the Attorney
General, State Treasurer Carter today
consented to pay claims to be
presented by John L McLaurin,
State warehouse commissioner.
The Attorney General held that
any available fund in the State treasury
could be used for the expense of
the warehouse system.
The appropriation is $15,000. Mr.
McLaurin went to Lake City today
to accept a warehouse for the State
system.

Death of Capt W D Fitch.
A 'phone message was received
here yesterday announcing the death
of Capt W D Fitch, which occurred
at the home of his son, Mr R B
Fitch, at Pergamos Tuesday afternoon.
Capt Fitch was about 75
years of age, a veteran of the Civil
war, and a good citizen.
For two years, 1909-10, he was
jailor here and made an efficient
officer. About the latter part of
the year 1910 he was stricken with
paralysis, and retired to his old
home, but he never fully recovered.
He was buried in the old Casselman
burying ground yesterday afternoon
at P. o'clock.

The Pee Dee Fair at Florence begins
today. The "Little Gate City"
has made elaborate preparations for
the entering of the stranpers within
her gates in her usual hospitable
style. We hope the fair may be in
every respect a successful affair.
The Railroad Commission issued
an order yesterday permitting the
Atlantic Coast Line railroad to discontinue
trains No 46 and 47, between
Lanes and Florence. The
new schedule becomes effective Sunday.
Several other trains on the
system will be discontinued on account
of lack of patronage.
We learn with sincere regret of i
the continued illness of our loyal and
esteemed White Oak correspondent,
Mr B W McElveen. We extend our
kindliest sympathy and truly hope
that the malady may soon yield to
treatment and that he can say in
the language of the poet, "Richard
is himself again."

The exhibit by the girls' tomato
clubs of this county Saturday promises
to be an interesting show. Practically
the same articles exhibited at
the State Fair will be shown here,

by the county agent, Miss Amanda
