TOBACCO OUTLOOK 1
MOST ENCOURAGING,
REPORTS INDICATE 25 PER CENT.
INCREASE IN THE ACREAGE
THIS YEAR.
Columbia, July 12:?inasmuch as
the tobacco harvest and marketing
season is about to open, the State
Department of Agriculture has been
busy during the past week getting
full information at first.hand in regard
to the crop conditions and in
regard to the markets and warehouses
that will be operated this
season,this being necessary,owing to
the fact that every pound of tobacco
sold in the State must be report
ed by months to the department.
Last week M J Miller, chief clerk
of the department, spent several
days going through the tobacco territory,
visiting the warehouses and
the warehousemen and getting complete
data preliminary to sending
out the necessary blanks.
Commissioner Watson in summarizing
the information that Has been
obtained gives the following interesting
data in regard to the outlook
. and to the market season:
TOBACCO OUTLOOK.
"The tobacco season in South Carolina
this year promises to be one of
the best in the history of the State.
Last year 33,299,561 pounds of tobacco
were raised and sold in the
State and brought to the producers
the sum of $4.584,339.51,an increase
of 37 per cent over the preceding
year in production and nearly $2,000,000
more than the preceding
year in money value. The average
price paid per pound was 13.77

last year there were 19 markets operating
42 warehouses. The markets
' were: Conway, Darhngton, Dillon,
Florence. Hemingway, Johnsonville,
Kingstree, Lake City, Lamar, Latta.
Loris, Manning, Marion, Mayesville,
Mullins,Nichols,Olanta, Page's Mills
and Timmonsville.
"This season it appears that there
will be only two warehouses that
were open last .year not in operation
this year, one at Mayesville and one
at. Florence. There will be in operation
this season the following new
warehouses: One at Aynor, two at
Eartsville, one at Hemingway, one
at Kingstree, one at Manning, two
at PamDlico. one at Sumter, one at
Olanta, one at Cheraw and probably
one at Dorchester.
"This means the establishment of
at least five, and probably six, new
markets this year?Aynor, Pamplico,
Hartsville, Sumter, Cheraw and
Dorchester.
"The handling of the tobacco crop
in South Carolina is largely handled
and conducted by two tobacco warehousemen's
associations, the one operating
in the territory west of the
Pee-Dee. which met during the past
week and organized for the season,
electing W E Lea of Timmonsville
president and G H Pegram of Florence
secretary, and the other operating
east of the Pee-Dee, of which
R M Winn of Mullins is secretary,
and which will meet to organize for
the season $t Mullins July 18.
"At the meeting at Florence the
general condition of the crop was
discussed and information reported,
sand the proper steps taken for the
opening of the marketing season.
"It has been agreed by both associations
to open the tobacco marketing
season in all warehouses throughout
the tobacco territory July 22,
and the indications are that there
will be a very large amount of tobacco
of fine quality offered at the
several 'breaks.'
"In regard to the crops this year
the reports indicate an increase of
25 per cent in acreage in the territory
around Kingstree. with the
yield per acre equally as good as last
year.
"Around Manning there was 25
per cent increase in acreage, but owing
to adverse conditions only about
75 per cent of a stand has been obtained.
Around Hartsville some
2,000 acres were planted, but a poor
stand was obtained. If conditions
had been better at the planting season
at least 3,000 acres would have
been put in. Around Timmonsville
the acreage was not increased and
the stdnd has not been so good as
usual. It is believed that in this
particular territory the crop will be
only about three-fourths of what it
was last year., Around Mullins the
usual acreage was planted, but the
season at the outset was bad and
there has been a poor stand. The
information that reaches this department
throughout the associations
and others is that the crop this

year win De pracucajiy uic same m
quantity as last year and there is
every indication that the quality will
be even better."
W E Lea of Timmonsville, the
head of the warehousemen's association,
predicts that the production of
tobacco in this State this year will
hardly be more than three-fourths
of the crop of last year.
A person who is too good to be j
true is a hypocrite.
