worth more than $500,000. by six
factories of Missouri. The industry
o
is one peculiar to Missouri. The
commodity is the corncob pipe. The
six factories produced 2^.173 SS2
cob pipes in 1912. Three of the
factories are in Washington, Franklin
county, and one each in lioonville,
Union and Owensviiie.
Shipments were made to Canada,
Europe. Asia, South America, Africa,
A .vStrah'a and New Zealand, besides
the arge number sent into
every State in the Union. Not less
than 13,0 o.uOO corncobs were utilized
for toe output of 2S,171,s72
pipes, allowing two bowls to each
cob, and figuring for those which
were wasted in the process of manufacture.
The cobs used by the pipe factories
were the largest obtainable.
Allowine 100 to the bushel, it took
150,000 bushels of cobs. It took
380 men and seventy-two women to
make the pipes. They were paid
$152,406.
The raw material put into the
pipes cost $288,361, half of which
went to the farmers for corncobs.
The industry represents an investment
of $2^0,344.

Washington gossip has it that
William J Bryan will retire from
public life at the close of the Wilson
administration. He has given
up all hope of being President and
doesn't want a second term as a

A New Bhck for an Old One-How It
Can Ce Done in hingstree.
The back aches at times with a
dull, indescribable feeling, making
you weary and restless; piercing
pains shoot across the region of the
kidneys, and again the loins are so
lame that to stoop is agony. No use
to rub or apply a plaster to the back
if the kidneys are weak. You cannot ,
reach the cause. Kingstree residents
would do well to profit by the following
example:
Mrs Jasper Martin, 3 Wood St.
Georgetown, S C. says: "My back
was so weak and lame that I could
hardly get around to do my housework
and I suffered all the time
from backache and pains across my
kidneys. I had little strength or energy
and the kidney secretions were
unnatural. Hearing about Doan's
Kidney Pills,I got a supply and they :
cured me. I have had no need of a '
kidney medicine since. You are

of my former endorsement of Doan's
