The loss is estimated at $20, 000,UUU and 1U.UOU people are nomeless. XXX The biggest mercantile failure in the history of the United States was that of the H B Claflin Company of New York last Thursday. The company owes $30,000,000, and claims assets of $44,000,000. XXX James L Ouzts, a prominent farmer of Greenwood county, committed suicide Tuesday of last week, shooting himself through the head. Despondency on account of ill health is said to have been the cause of the deed. XXX Mrs John M Peay of Columbia fell on the front steps of the residence of William F Jacquet Monday night, as she was going up the steps, and broke her neck. When Mrs Peay fell tho atones nhe had her three-vear old baby daughter in her arms. The child was uninjured. XXX Pay Inspector Samuel McGowan, of this State, has been nominated as paymaster general of the navy and chief of the bureau of supplies and accounts, with the rank of rear admiral. Mr McGowan is probably the youngest man ever appointed paymaster of the United States navy, being only 44 years old. XXX Robert Kelly, a merchant of Columbia, walked into the lobby of a local hotel early Monday morning and, seating himself at a writing desk, committed suicide by drinking the contents of a bottle of carbolic acid. No motive for the act is apparent. Mr Kelley went to Columbia from Hartsville. He was 35 years old and is survived by his wife and three small children. XXX Joe Kelley. a former policeman at Williamston, was shot and killed Monday on the streets of that town by Claude Poore, a member of the I Williamston police force. Poore ^hot Kelly six times and death followed shortly after the shooting. Kelly was unarmed. XXX There has been a scarcity of water in Charleston the past week caused by the bursting of the 24inch pipe conducting the water from Goose creek to the city.
