to her home at Waynesboro, Pa,
Tuesday.
We are pleased to note that Miss
Retha Burgess, who was indisposed
several days the first part of the
week, is able to be at her post of
duty again.
The official thermometer at this
place reached 101 degrees Tuesday
'and 102 degrees yesterday. So far
the hottest days of this year by several
degrees.
Miss Martha Gordon returned
yesterday from Columbia, where
she went to see her mother, Mrs a
M Gordon, who is now at the Waverly
sanitarium.
Mr W F Caldwell, the Columbia
representative of the News & Courier,
paid this office a pleasant visit
Tuesday while here to report the
State campaign meeting.
Misses El ma Hinds, Essie Blakeley
and Alma Davis are visiting in Baltimore.
They will be the guests of
Mrs John Slater Jennings at Royal
Oak, Md, before returning home.
We regret to learn that our friend,
Mr J C Dobbin of Richmond, Va.has
been compelled to go to New York
for medical treatment. All hope
soon to hear of his restoration to
health.
It was reported to us Monday by
a reliable gentleman of Taft, that a
negro woman living in cne neignuur-,
hood gave birth to three babies
Sunday night?two boys and one
girl; all doing well.
The commencement exercises of
Memminger school, Charleston, took
place Thursday night of last week.
Among the graduates in the normal1
class was Miss Jane Shoolbrook Ball,
a grand-daughter of Rev Dr Robert
Wilson.

Mr S Marcus, accompanied by his I
daughter, Miss Lilly,is spending a va
cation in the Adirondack mountains
of New York. Mr Marcus's health has
been poor for some time past and
we trust that he will be greatly benefited
by his sojourn at the North.
According to the Columbia State,
at Phenix, Arizona, and Columbia, S
C, last Tuesday the caloric was the
most intense in the whole United
States. The two cities tied with a
temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

The room just vacated by the
Scott Drug Co is now being overhauled
and fitted up for a "booze
shop," which will be opened here by
the dispensary board tomorrow. A
list of the stock.with prices, will appear
in an ad to be published in The
Record next week.
We regret to announce that Presiding
Elder H B Browne, of *the
Kingstree district, is very much indisposed.

Miss Mamie McLees.supervisor of
rural schools in Williamsburg county,
left Monday for Rock Hill,where
she and a number of other ladies
holding similar positions in the State
are guests this week of Winthrop
college. From Rock Hill Miss McLees
will go to her home at Greenwood
for a two weeks' vacation.
The little 3-year-old boy of Mr
Cosmos, the fruit merchant at the
corner of Main street and Hampton
avenue,fell into the watering trough
at the intersection of Mill street and
Hampton avenue yesterday and was
saved from drowning only by the
timely efforts of Mr L T Thompson,
who saw the child when he fell in

head foremost.
Mr Hugh McCutchen, president
of the Wee Nee bank, and Hon E C
Epps, cashier of the Bank of Williamsburg,
are attending the Carolina
Bankers' association at the Isle
of Palms today. Hon Carter Glass,
member of Congress from Lynchburg,
Virginia, and framer of the
new currency law, will make an address
to the association.

Rev Dr Robert Wilson, who has
for a number of years been the beloved
minister of St A1 ban's Episcopal
church here, tendered his resignation
this week, owing to failing
health,and Bishop Guerry plt.ced the
care of this church in the charge of
Rev Harold Thomas of Florence and
his assistant, Rev Mr Bull. The latter
will conduct his first service here
next Tuesday at 8:30 p. m. All are
in vi tea.
Our esteemed friend, Mr V E
Lifrage, of the vicinity of Salters,
yesterday presented us with a
nice water-melon. This is the
earliest ripe water-melon we have
ever seen grown in this county.
July 4 used to be considered about
the earliest date for the luscious
fruit. We thank our friend most
heartily for his kind remembrance
and assure him thHt it was a treat
to all the family.
Returning from Charleston Tuesday
night on an A C L excursion, an
obstreperous negro named Elijah
Manning,claiming to hail from Maxton,North
Carolina,got intoadispute
with several others of his race and
proceeded to use his pistol with painful
effect upon his antagonists,shooting
one in the leg and another in the
arm. The shooting occurred near
Monck's Corner, in Berkeley county,
but the negro was not arrested till
the train reached Kingstree, where
he is being held for the Sheriff of
Berkeley county, who will probably
take charge of him today.
Sirs. Annie J. Kennedy Dead.
Mrs Annie H Kennedy, widow of
the late Mr W F Kennedy, died at
her home here yesterday morning at
9 o'clock, after a painful illness ex- j
tending over six months. Mrs Ken- j
nedy's husband died on the same,
date two years ago. The deceased
was about 50 years of age and leaves
five children: Mrs J C Kelley, Misses
Eunice,Lyde and Helen Kennedy and
Mr Urban Kennedy. Mrs Kennedy's
remains were taken to Lake City,
her old home, on train No 80 this
morning for interment.
