In the "War Drama of the: Eagles" .Mr. Edward Eraser has! traced .he history of one of Xapo-j ie >n"> i.iost successful ideas. When! tlie committee that was considering! a suitable emblem for the newly established empire suggested the traditional Gallic cock Napoleon would not hear of it. "Bali!" he cried contemptuously. "The cock belongs to the farmyard. It is far too feeble a creature!" Overriding their final choice, which was a lion couehunt, he substituted the eagle. "It allirms the imperial dignity," he explained, "and recalls Charlemagne." It is doubtful if it would have recalled Charlemagne without a | good deal of prompting of the pub-; lie mind, but it really did recall the conquering eagles of the Roman legions, and this association Napoleon emphasized by putting an eagle, Roman fashion, on the staf of every regimental flag. These eagles, he decreed, rather than the perishable tricolor that streamed below them, should be regarded, honored and cherished as the standards of the array. The artist Isabey designed them. They were made of copper and gilded, weighed three pounds and a half and were eight inches in ??%/%Viac3 leom nri'nrr UClgUl OiiU U1UC lliOll^O 11VIU TT 1UM tip to wing tip. They were receded only from the hands of the emper-' or. To lose one was to incnr dishonor that could be wiped out only by the capture of an enemy's flag in battle. No lost eagle might be replaced except by special permission of the emperor. The "presentation of the eagles," when Napoleon, crowned and sceptered and attended by the Empress Josephine, the court and the mar shals of France, bestowed the new standards on the regiments on the Champ de Mars, wa3 one of the most magnificent pageants that the world has known. "Soldiers, behold your standards!" the emperor declaimed, with a sweeping gesture. "These eagles shall ever be to you the rallying point. Wherever your emperor shall deem it needful for the defense of the throne and people, there shall they be seen. \ o? swear to sacrifice your lives ever in , their defense, to maintain them by J your courage ever in the path of victory? You swear it?" There ( was a moment's breathless pause, : then a thundering shout amid the 1 flash of raised sabers, "We swear it !" 1 France still flies her tricolor, hoa- . ored at home and abroad, but the ' imperial eagles vanished with the empire and its bloody glories. ( Ths Healthful Art of Yawning. Dr. Naegeli, professor of. medicine at Liege university, commends ; the practice of yawning. A good J yawn, the Belgian professor maintains, is excellent for the lungs and for all the breathing organs, but 1 there is an art in yawning just the same as there is an art in breafh- 1 ing. Every yawn should be as deep 1 as possible, so as to bring all the ! muscles of the throat and chest into 1 action and also to fill the vital or- ] gans with a current of fresh air. Dr. Xaegeli has known of many ] cases in which a sore throat has 1 been alleviated by persistent yawn- * ing.?London Chronicle. f i Behind the Times. HUMAN BODIES CHANGING/ Mow It Seeme We Are to Loo* 0wt Teeth, Naila and Hair. There is no doubt that the human race is fast losing its teeth, hair and nails and that sooner or later many other parts of the body; which man has possessed for ages will begin to disappear. This fact, however, is no cause for alarm. It is, on the contrary, a matter for congratulation, because oTnai-ionni cVirtira f h af o vorir Tinrt of OiiV tf U Vill* v v? v*j |/v>* v. th^e body which nature discards is a part which we have outgrown. The human body can never be brought to its highest efficiency until its parts have been reduced to ar minimum, and it is not under ft handicap of having to carry aroxmd things like hair and nails, which no longer serve any useful purpose. Take the teeth, for example. Who wants or really needs goruklike jaws and teeth today? They were necessary in the days when our ancestors had to crack cocoanuts with them, but our civilization is rapidly approaching a stage where they will no longer be needed. The nails f>n our lingers and toea have long since ceased to be claw*. * The toe nails in particular had* dwindled to such minor importance that it is nothing unusual for ft haby to be born with only the moei rudimentary nail on its little toe. All this is due to the faet that we have found a way of dispensing with the use of claws. Although most of us do not reilize it, the race's sense of smell ii weakening rapidly, ahd there is a marked loss of power in the olfactory tract of the brain. This is not it all surprising when you stop to thing how small a part the noee plays in man's life today. Smell is of little service to us in making a living or enjoying one, md we seldom if ever refer to it except iu such figurative cxpreelions as a newspaper man's "noee for news," or he "smells a rat." Our tails are almost gone, and we niss them so little that many of ua lo not know that we ever had them. \ll that remains of them now is four or five joints, which are de;ached and movable at birth and which do not fuse into a single bone until we are about twenty rears old. These joints would, hovrjver, even now make quite respectible looking tails if they were slowed to come through the skin.*? S'ew York American.
