Lake City, May 12:?Field day
exercises for Florence county went
off beautifully last Friday. A special
train was put on at Lake City, also
there were specials from Timmonsville
to Florence. The Lake City
special, a train of six passenger cars,
vilfcB filled, there being no standing
room before the train left Cowards
and it was necessary to send the
special back for the Cowards crowd
and various points between that
place and Florence. Large crowds
left here also on the eight o'clock and
the noon trains.
Thursday evening the essayists
edeclaimers held forth and, much
ur pride, Miss Grace Jeffords,
the eighth grade Lake City
h school, came off with the gold
medal, having read the best essay.
Much credit should be given
"Gracie," this being her first literary
effort, and, though perhaps the
technique was somewhat crude, yet
it showed that it was her own composition.
Friday morning the several
schools marched in the parade,
in the order in which they
came, and although our school did
t not win the prize for having the

L In the arts and crafts, Lake City
r school also brought away trophies,

exhibit of raffia work, Little Mi3s
* Mable Johnson's being the best
specimen. Ethel Epps won a prize
in the hundred yard dash, and last,
but not least, our boys just wallopi
pd the high school baseball team to
Lflufrp'sh. All in all, the school chil^|Ij,
the teachers, promoters of the
' first annual field day, patrons and
friends of the various schools, should
be indeed complimented for the
(r'->asant things done and seen. And
lirenee herself was a gracious
Btess, no unpleasantness, rather

to attend the May festival.
Mr J E Stokes has returned from
a trip to the Jacksonville Reunion.
He says there was a large crowd in
j Jacksonville and the veterans certainly
seemed to have been enjoying
everything.
A large owl's foot was brought to
your correspondent this morning,
having been sent to Mr Stokes by
Mr John P Eaddy. The owl was
caught and killed yesterday on Mr
Eaddy's place. Those familiar with
this kind of bird of prey say that
this is the largest foot they have
ever seen. But just what sign is it
to catch and kill an owl?
Without doubt a more interest
ed crowd was never seen at the
postoffice than was there this morning?because
this was the initial
morning in the new building, the
postmaster having taken possession
of it yesterday afternoon, at which
time new boxes were assigned and
the usual routine work attended to
in the new home. Besides the efficient
postmaster are Miss Addie Rollins
and Mr S D Rickenbaker assisting
in the new office.
The mahogany fixtures, new bcxes,
spacious lobby and the modernness
of it all certainly has improved the
looks and even the amount of one's
mail this morning.
The recent sand storms Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, together
with the hot, sultry days following,

thankful to the city fathers for the
street sprinkler, which hasn't'arrived
yet,but just the thought of its
being here shortly has relieved us
of so much unnecessary "if we only
had one." An appropriation was
taken up by the merchants and leading
business men of the town, which
was presented to the council with
the request that it accept same and
with additional funds purchase a
street sprinkler. The council took
I this matter under advisement and
| as a result opened its purse and refunded
the citizens their money.
A large transfer of realty in Lake
City will be of much interest to
j prospective buyers. Mr Sterling
Leftwich, representing a large real
estate concern in Virginia, purchased
from Mr C M Kellty the tract of
land situated just below the school
house lot and extending along the
j edge of the woods as far down as
j Mr Kelley's residence. Several
I streets will be opened, lots cut off
and a large sale will probably he

Mr Lide Carter left < yesterday 1
morning for Southport, N C, to attend
the Lewis-Carter nuptials today.
Mr Carter will be best man
for his brother, Mr J Hoyt Carter,
cashier of the Bank of Cades. Many
invitations have been received here,
as this is Mr Carter's home. After
a few days' honeymoon in Virginia,
Mr and Mrs Carter will make their
home at Cades. Mr Carter has a
host of friends here who wish for
them both a long life of happiness
and marital bliss.
Miss Mollie Nachman leaves this
afternoon for Charleston, where she
will attend and participate as bridesmaid
in the Fechter-Shimmel wedding.
Mrs Roddy Read of Rock Hill is
the guest of her sister, Mrs Ora
Lemon, at the Halcyon.
Mr J P Hutson of Kingstree visited
relatives in town Sunday.
The many friends of Mr Maxie
Thomas regret to learn of his illness
at the infirmary in Florence and
wish for him a speedy recovery to
his former good health. Mr Boyd
Thomas of Kingstree stopped over
here yesterday, having spent Sunday
with his father at Florence.
Mr Robert J Hutson of Rocky
Mount, was noted in town Sunday.

Prize Essay?Sumptuous Dinner. ,
Last Saturday was Memorial day, f
and the occasion was appropriately celebrated
here by the members of
Camp Pressley, United Confederate
Veterans, and the United Daughters
of the Confederacy. The latter arranged
and carried out an interesting
and entertaining programme for
the enjoyment of the veterans, who
pvailed themselves of the opportunity
of spending a day more pleasantly
than they ever had on a battlefield
or in an army camp. There
were about forty old "vets" present
and each one seemed to have had a
good time.
At one o'clock the members of the
camp assembled at the court house, j
where they heard an excellent address
by Rev P S McChesney.
Some time ago the local chapter of
the Daughters of the Confedera- I
cy offered a prize of $5.00 in gold I
fbr the best essay written by a school I
hnv or trirl on the subiect: "Whv I
the Southern States Seceded." The
prize was won by Master Mauldin
Lesesne, of the Kingstree High and
Graded school. On this occasion
the essay was read by Hon Robert J
Kirk, who afterwards presented the
young man with the prize. 1
A number of teachers and young
lady pupils of Kingstree High and
Graded school were present and sang
several patriotic songs.
At this juncture the meeting adjourned
to partake of the sumptuous
repast that had been provided by the
Daughters and ladies of Kingstree.
The dinner was spread in the new
Central warehouse, and the veterans
marched there in a body.
After dinner the "old boys" repaired
to the court house.where the

with musical selections.
A collection was taken up by outsiders
with which to buy powder,
and "Poor Conrad" Constine was
pressed into artillery again for the
time being. The old cannon on the
court house square was his only field
piece, but it served the desired purpose,
that of making a noise.
The old soldiers returned to their
homes much pleased with their entertainment,
many expressing the
belief that they had a better time in
Kingstree than they would have had
at Jacksonville.
Mrs. M. A. Martin Dead.
Trio, May 13:?Mrs M A Martin,
sf this community, died April 10,
1914. She was born January 19,
1850, making her a little more than
>4 years old at the time of her death.
She was sick two months before the
?nd came, and she bore her 3uffer- I
rgs with patience. ^
There are left to mourn her death I
Mght children and twenty-nine grand- I
children, besides many other rela- I
;ives and friends.
She was beloved by those who I
cnew her and, though feeble and in- 1
irm.will be sadly missed in our com- 1
nunity.
