JOHNSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL. *
Venters, May 6:?The Excelsior
Literary society of Johnsonville
High school held its regular meeting
last Friday, May 1. The programme
consisted of a debate, current
events and music, the query
for debate being: Resolved,that the
South would have been better off
I
today if the war between the States
had resulted in Southern victory.
The spring weather seemed to have
had a most disastrous effect on the
school, as not much interest was
taken in the debate. The judges
decided in favor of the negative.
The tenth grade has been lavishly,
entertained during the past few '
weeks. Friday evening, April 24,!
the ninth grade entertained the
tenth grade and teachers at the residence
of Mr C J Rollins. A few
days previous to this Miss Cornelia
Cookfield, of the tenth grade, also
entertained her class-mates and
friends. These events were most
enjoyable and made the graduating
class partially forget the hard work
which was before them.
The piano recital by the music pupils
was largely attended and readings
and choruses were given at intervals
during the evening. We are all
looking forward to the last lyceum
number, which is to be on Saturday
evening, May 9.

decisively defeated as a candidate
for re-election as Mayor of Columbia
Tuesday.

; ing, a very delicious and bountiful
' dinner, and last, but not least, Mr ^
IC Constine came to the scene with
his boat,"The Wanderer,''and gave

down the river, which was especially ^
enjoyed.
