MR. W.L.ASKINS' DEATH SHOCKS
COMMUNITY?INFANT FATALLY
SCALDED-PERSONAL NOTES.

Lake City, March 17:?The entire
community was shocked Sunday afternoon
when it was learned that Mr
W L Askins had died very suddenly.
He had been in apparently good
health and just an hour prior to his
death had partaken of his dinner,
retiring to his room with a headache
only a few minutes before he
expired. Mrs Askins became alarmed
at the quietness and entered his
room,finding him gasping for breath.
Before medical assistance could be
had he had passed away. Mr Askinsj
was the youngest son of Major S M j
Askins, of this place, having been j
born and reared here. He was only !
,12 years old. In 1905 he married (
Miss Marie Beavers and besides his i
wife and father, he leaves two small
sons. The interment took place yesterday
afternoon at 4 o'clock al the
Lake City cemetery. Messrs J M
Sturgeon, A M Parker, Jr, J M Truluck
and D M Epps acted as pallbearers.
Last Thursday the infant son of
Mr and Mrs Thad Anderson, who reside
near town, fell into some scalding
water and died Saturday night
from the wounds received. The
burial took place Sunday afternoon
at Pergamos.
Mr L L Caldwell, who has been
quite ill for the past several weeks,

day and at this writing his condition
is still unimproved. His sons, Messrs
V R Caldwell of Kingstree.S C Caldwell
of Darlington and Dixie Caldwell
of Clemson College, are all at
home with the family. The attending
physicians are of the opinion
that a recovery to his former health
under the conditions is impossible.
The stricken man and his family
have the sincere sympathy of all the
commuuuy.
Miss Dora Hinnant, the efficient
and popular young teacher at the
Gaskins school on Dr DuRant's plantation,
spent the week-end at home
with her mother. Miss Hinnant is
very much interested in her work
and during the last two months has
organized a literary society, calling
it the "Woodrow Wilson Literary
society," which she hopes to have in
shape to hold a public meeting in
the near future.
Miss Violet Askins,another of our
young school-ma'ams, spent the
week-end at home with her parents.

of Kingstree were the guests
of Mr A B Brick last Sunday.
Mrs T J Cottingham and children
have returned home, after a short
visit to relatives in the upper part
of the State.
Mrs J L Stuckey, who has been
quite ill, is convalescing rapidly, and
her two daughters, Misses Laura, of
Columbia, and Blanch, of Florence,
have returned to. finish their studies.
Miss Salome Hilb of Sumter is the
guest of her sister, Mrs B Herman,
of this place.
Miss Mollie Nachman has returned
from the North,bringing with her
almost laughable frills and tales of
"colored hair," etc. But we'll all be
wearing them before the next moon
' comes around.
Messrs A E Hill and J D Galloway
of Cooper postoffice were in town
last week
Mr W W Singletary of Cades was
noted in town this week.
Mrs J F Epps and her charming
daughter, of Cades, were in town
shopping last Saturday.
Mr B F Brockington, Jr, of Cowards
was in town on business last
week.
Mrs R F Joyner and little daughter
left this morning for Blacksburg
to attend the marriage of the former's
brother, Dr Floyd Rodgers, to
Miss Mary Anderson.
Mr3 E D Sallenger and little son
of Florence are jhere at the home of
the former's parents, Dr and Mrs A
H Williams, while the latter are
spending some time in Florida.

Governor Blease has granted a
parole to John J Jones, the Branchville
attorney who was convicted in
the Orangeburg county court in 1911
on the charge of killing Abe Pearlstine
and sentenced to 10 years and
30 days imprisonment. The parole
was granted on the condition that
Jones leave the State within 24
hours. He was serving his sentence
on the Orangeburg chaingang at
the time of his release, having been
transferred there some time ago
from the State penitentiary ago on
the alleged ground of ill health.
