Common Pleas Court.
The spring term of the court of
common pleas opened here Monday
aning with Judge Frank R Gary
of Abbeville presiding. Court Stenographer
L E Wood of Sumter and
all other court officers were on hand,
ready for business. There were
only two jury cases on the docket,
one being the case of J C Scott
against the Liverpool and London
and Globe Insurance Co, Ltd, suit!
to recover the sum of $1,800 on an
insurance policy. The other was
that of Mr M II Jacobs against John
deS Gilland, Esq, to recover a sum
of monev elainipd hv the defendant
to be due through the purchase of
the goods and accounts of the Carolina
Furniture Co, a bankrupt concern.
The case of Mr Scott against the 1
insurance company was the first
taken up and occupied the attention
of the court during Monday and
until Tuesday noon. The case was1
ably represented on both sides,
Messrs Keily & Hinds being attorneys
for the complainant, while
Messrs L Roy Lee and Frank G
Tompkins of C >lumbia t" <k care of
the defendant company's interests.
Able arguments on both sides were
made. Judge Gary charged the
jury at some length, and at 12
o'clock they retired, returning with
a verdict in favor of the plaintiff.

In the matter of Jacobs against
Gilland, R J Kirk, Esq, representing
the defendant, stated that he
had been out of his office for some;
time and was not prepared to go
into a trial of the case; that Mr
Gilland who had possession of all
the records pertaining to it, had
recently removed his office to Florence
and it was impossible for him 1
to pet hold of such records at this
time. Judge Gary reluctantly continued
the case until the June term.
After considering a number of
minor motions, issuing decrees, etc,
court adjourned 't>c at noon
yesterday.
