LEGISLATIVE NOTES.
Matters of General and Local
Interest Briefly Mentioned.
Columbia, February 16:?Special:
The House during the past week
has passed and sent to the Senate
two bills which have as their object
the abolition of all houses of ill
fame within the borders of the
State. Action on the part of the
Senate and the Governor is being
eagerly awaited, both by proponents
and opponents of the two bills,
but the impression is rather general
that both of the measures will successfully
pass muster before the upper
branch and the Chief Executive.

of York and proposes to apply the
injunction process in remedying the
social evil, which is much shorter
and more direct than the legal
method by which houses of prostitution
may be closed up. If passed
this will go into effect July 1, 1914,
The other bill was recommended
by the Judiciary committee and is
ii^ effect the application of the
Mann White Slave act to this State,
making it a felony for anyone to
transport from one town within the
State to another or to harbor any
woman or girl for immoral purposes.
The Sanders bill was passed on second
reading by a vote of 68 to 35,
and the committee bill received the
total vote of 91 cast. Messrs Smiley,
Kellahan and Kirk voted throughout
iD favor of the bills and Mr Kirk
made a stirring speech in favor of
the Sanders' bill.
Mr Smiley has a bill on the calendar
to require persons who hold hot
suppers or festivals for profit to
secure a license. The bill may be
reached this week. Such legislation
was urged by the recently formed
State Sheriffs' association which
met in this city. They pointed out
that much of the disorderly conduct
in the country was due to the
influence of these hot suppers and
that a license would have the effect
of cutting out a number of such
entertainments.
A bill has been introduced by Mr
Kirk, and is now on the calendar for
its seccnd reading, which would regulate
the practice of veterinary
surgery in this State by providing a
State board of examiners. Mr Kirk
also has a joint resolution directing
the Comptroller-General to draw his
warrant for $2.31& in favor of M F
Heller.

delegation submitting the question
of the repeal of the exemption of
certain sections of the county from
the operations of the the general
stock law to a special election to be
held in the territory affected.
Senator Epps has a bill, "Fixing a
schedule of licenses and rules and
regulations for the catching and
shipping of sturgeon and for nonresidents
fishing for said sturgeon."

Numerical Growth of Churches.
According to statistics recently
compiled for the Federal Council of
Churches, the year 1913 was one of
steady advancement in membership
for the Christian churches in the
United States. The net gain in enrollment
for the year was 618,000,
or about two per cent. The Methodists*
were the most successful in
gaining new members, showing a
net increase of 220,000, or more
than one-third of the entire increase.
The Catholics were a close second
with an increase of 212,000. Then
come in oruer the Baptists, with a
gain of 64,600, the Presbyterians,
45,600, the Lutherans, 36,100, the
Disciples, 21,800 and the Episcopalians,
16,500.
The present membership of these
leading denominations is given as
follows:
Roman Cathlic 13,099,534
Methodist 7,125,669
Baptist 5,924,663
Lutheran 2,338,722
Presbyterian 2,027,593
Disciples of Christ 1,519,369
Protestant Episcopal. 997,407
These figures are encouraging.
They show that the churches are
not losing ground relative to the
growth of population. In spite of
the wholesale charges of ungodliness
so constantly repeated, it remains
true that we Americans take
.an interest in our churches and turn
to them for spiritual help in constantly
increasing numbers.? Southern

Governor and Newspaper Man
Have Short Conversation.
Today's (Friday's) hearing in the
State Insane Asylum investigation
was marked by a short colloquy between
Governor Blease and Joseph
Sparks,a well known newspaper man
who has been reporting the meetings
of the committee. The Governor
read extracts from the record of
the committee's ??ssions, which, he
said, sustained hit position in the entire
matter, and stated that unless

of the committee he wished to send
it in a special message to the Legislature,
as he knew the newspapers
would not print it.
Mr Sparks arose and stated that if
j the committee would furnish him
with a copy of the minutes in question
he would gladly publish the vital
parts. Governor Blease said:
"Yes,and the 'vital parts' will all be
against Blease," to which Mr Sparks
j replied: "The Governor may point
jout what he considers the vital
j parts."
"When I get to be news censor ior
the Columbia State," said the Governor,
"I won't be on this earth; I
will be in hell."
"You are damn right," replied
Mr Sparks. Chairman Mauldin

Chicago, February 12:?The signers
of the call for the Prophetic conference
at the Moody Bible institute
of Chicago, February 24-27, are
sending out a request for prayer in
the churches of the country on the
Sunday preceding. The response to
the call has been Unprecedented and
a great gathering is expected. The
teachers represent most of the religious
denominations and will discuss
such themes as "The Signs of the
Times," The Doctrine of the Last
IT hi ncrs." "Foreien Missions."
"Evangelism," "Messianic Prophecy,"
"Present Day Apostasy," "The
Second Coming of Christ as a Working
Power in the Church and Community"
and "Personal Holiness."
