i largest, prettiest heads of cabbages
we have ever seen. It weighed sixpounds
and was perfectly formed.
Such cabbages should command a

Mr W K Tate,State Supervisor of
rprnl schools, is expected in Kings-1
tree next week, whence he will
visit several schools in tee county in
company with Miss Mamie McLees,
county supervising teacher of rural
schools, and County Superintendent

pieces and the horse took fright,

of the vehicle are fortunate to
have escaped with only a few minor
bruises.
Among the passengers on the illfated
steamer Monroe, who went to
their death in the collision that took
place last Friday near Norfolk, Va,

Ingram was on his way to New York
on a business trip when the fatal
disaster occurred. He was a brother-in-law
of Judge John S Wilson.
Tuesday and Wednesday of next
week,February 10 and ll,Kingstree
District Preachers' Conference and
Missionary institute of the Methodist
Episcopal church, South, will
hold its annual meeting in the Methodist
church here. Several distinguished
pastors from other districts
have been invited to be present and
deliver addresses upon this occasion.
One of our good friends at Benson
sent us last week a sackful of
meal ground from his prize corn;
also a sackful of Graham flour; so
that for the past week we have been
luxuriating in corn muffins and
buck-wheat cakes. There may not
be much money in raising wheat in
this county, but to our mind it is
one of the choicest products of the
farm.
A meeting of the board of stewards
of the Kingstree district, M E
church, South, was held yesterday
at the district parsonage. The
members of the body present were:
Messrs J Davis Carter, Leo; J J M
Graham, Cades; R F Joyner, Lake
City; B B Chandler, Rome; G Matthews,
Cowards; and E C Coskrey,
Wilsons Mills. In addition to the
transaction of routine business the
board ordered that much-needed
repairs be made to the parsonage
Miss Amanda Edwards of Latta
arrived in Kingstree yesterday to
take up her duties as supervisor of
the tomato club work to be carried
on in Williamsburg county in connection
with rural schools during
the coming season. Miss Edwards
was appointed to this position by
j the United States Department of
Agriculture upon the recommendation
of the county board of education.
She is a sister of Mrs W E Nesmith,
with whom she will make her home
when in Kingstree.
February 2 was "Ground hog
day." On that day the little animal
fares forth and casts his weather
eye athwart the boundless horizon.
If he sees the sun and easts a shadow,
back he scurries to his hole or den
or lair, and there he continues to
hibernate, for in his poor, weak
way, he opines that winter is not
yet over. Monday, the diminutive
weather forcaster saw his shadow
plainly and hastened homeward,
which in the opinion of many far
older and wiser than we, betokens
some hard, wintry weather yet to
come.

MORE BUILDINGS IN SIGHT.
Several Enterprising Business
Firms Erecting New Homes.
Several weeks ago we made mention
of various improvements going
on in Kingstree in the way of new
buildings and repairs to old ones.
Today it is our pleasure to note
that several other contracts have
been let and the work of construction
has already begun on some of
them.
Mr W H Carr awarded a contract
last week for the erection of a handsome
three-story brick building on
Brooks street to be occupied by the
Kingstree Hardware Company. Ex
cavating is now well under way
and a force of bricklayers will commence
on the foundation within the
next week. This building, when
completed, will be up-to-date in every
particular and will cost approximately
58,000. ^
Mr E ? Burgess has also let a
contractrior the erection of a large
one-story brick store-house to be occupied
by the People's Mercantile
Company, Inc. This structure will
be located on an adjoining lot to Mr
Carr's building, and will be so constructed
to accommodate,conveniently,
the large mercantile business
conducted by this wellknown firm,
of which Mr Burgess is president.
Dr R Claude McCabe has just let
a contract for the erection of a two*

Mr Charles H Singleton, the wellknown
contractor and builder from
Asheville, N C, has all of the above
contracts in hand and will push the
work to completion as rapidly as materials
can be supplied and good
workmanship will permit.

commence work on a frame dwelling
near the river within a few weeks.

KIngstree's Band.
The Kingstree Cornet band, under
the leadership of Mr L T Thompson,
made its first appearance in
public Mondty evening, it being
engaged by Mr A J Reese to furnish
music upon the occasion of the
opening of "The Comet," the new
moving picture theatre he is now
conducting in the McCabe building.
The band gave an open air concert
at the monument before going to
the hall and all who heard it heartily
commend the leader and the members
on the excellent progress they
have made since the inception of the
organization, some time in December.
During the course of the
evening a number of selections were

quite evident that with continued
application in the study of the instruments
and with an equal amount
of success in the future on the part
of the members as in the past, Kingstree
will be able to boast of a really
good brass band before many
months roll by.
Coroner's Jury Fall to Agree.
The Coroner's jury summoned to
investigate the slwoting on December
27 of Roy Brockinton by King
Bell, both negroes, at Trio, held its
second inquisition yesterday and
again failed to reach a decision as to
the guilt or innocence of the accus?

was shot by Bell, and died from the
effects of the wound a few days
later. The shooting was claimed to
be accidental and the dead.negro
was buried without the holding of
an inquest. Later developments arroused
suspicion and Coroner Kinder
had the body exhumed and an
inquest was held January 28.
The jury failed to agree, but the
Coroner considered the evidence
against Bell strong enough to justify
his being held for further investigation
into the case. Yesterday
the jury reconvened and again failed
to reach a conclusion. The accused
is in jail and the case will be
submitted to the grand jury.
Miss Carrie Scott, who has been
spending some time with relatives
in Charleston, has returned home.
Mr Bertie Edwards returned to
!?is home at Savannah, Ga, Wednesday
night, after spending some time
wiih relatives and friends here.

his resignation as State Supervisor
of Rural schools for South
Carolina to take effect May 1. Mr
Tate will go to the Peabody College
for Teachers at Nashville, Tenn,
