Baltimore Sua Seems to Think
Entente Cordlale Is Strained.
Monday's Sun contained a picture
of Senator "Ben" Tillman, of South
Carolina, headed "South Carolinian
Now Fighting: Erysipelas," which
seemed to indicate to the editorial
mind that this famous Southern war
horse was in a critical condition.
The picture was accordingly made
the text of an editorial, which frankly
discussed the Senator's career,

close to it as v a3 delicate and decent
tinder the circumstances. What
was our astonishment to note in yesterday's
edition that the Senator
was so discourteous and so little appreciative
of our kind words that he
has turned up in Washington, after
his holiday visit to South Carolina,
more robust than he has been for
years. And .0 add insult to injury,
be boasts that he has been feasting
on hog jowl and collards while at
home, and is all the better for that
ethereal diet.
Some papers, after such an edidorial,
might refuse to let a sick
man get well so quickly in its columns,
and might insist in his remaining
ill long enough to justify its
remarks. But though we are disconcerted
by the Senator's giving
the "merry ha! ha!" we will magnanimously
forgive him and even
congratulate him on his Dowers of
digestion. And we'll wager an
Eastern Shore hog jowl and a big
dish of cohards on the side, that
there is somebody who feels more
disconcerted than we do by the Senator's
sudden and impolite recovery,
and that is his fellow South Carolinian,
Governor Blease. And if hog
jowl and collards will prolong the
Senator's health and strength, we
will cheerfully subscribe to a fund

THREE SUICIDES IN 3 MONTHS

Darlington, January 22:?J A
Blackwell, the third man of this
county in the past three months to
commit suicide, took his life here
today. About 11 o'clock this morning
a noie was brought to Police*
man Weatherford by a negro girl
of seven years, and it read:
"Send a doctor to my house first,
then send to the cemetery for my
body. Good-bye, my darling, 1 die
for you, good-bye. J A BiacKweii.
January 22, 1914."
Imraeaiately upon reading: this
note Chief Mozingo and Mr Weatherford
jumped into a passing auto
and rushed to the cemetery, where
they found Mr Blackwell still alive,
but with a bullet hole in his right
temple. A doctor was rushed to the
scene, but could do nothing, as the
wound was necessarily a mortal one,
the bullet passing through the brain.
Death did not occur until about
half an hour after the officers
reached there.
Mr Blackwell was a native of this
county and had for years been employed
by the Coca-Cola Company of
this place, hut more recently he had
charge of the Gulf Refining Company's
ocal station.
Mr Blackwell was reported to
have been very despondent for some
weeks and, it is stated, repeatedly
said that he intended to end it all
with i> shot.
He is survived by his wife, three
children and three brothers, all of
whom live in Darlington.
WHITE OAK CHIPS

White Oak,January 20:?Mr Chas
Harrelson of Clarendon,N C, returned
home Monday afternoon, after
spending a week pleasantly with his
sister's. Mrs A P Buffkin's, family.
Rev Mr Peeler,the new Methodist
minister at Cades, visited among his
flock here one day last week.
Mr Early Dewitt is erecting a
mcdern country store building on
his recently acquired premises in
this vicinity,
Mr A P Buffkin has finished an
addition to his dwelling and has removed
therein. Mr Buffkin is now
the owner of a very fine farm, and
we are glad to have him with us.
Mr S B Campbell of Kingstree was
given a hearty welcome in our vicinity
Monday and Tuesday.
Miss Susie Parrott, a charming
young lady, was united in holy wedlock
to Mr Henry Grimsley, an accomplished
young gentleman of
Lake City, at the bride's home Sunday
afternoon. Many relatives and
friends witnessed the interesting
ceremony, which was performed by
Judge P McClure Brockinton. This
happy young couple has our best
wishes for a long and happy voyage
on the sea of life.
Mr John Galloway of Lamar has
mcved here and will farm with
his father-in-law, Mr M M Cox, the
ensuing year.
White Oak has improved consider
ably the past year in the way of
new buildings,repairs, land purchases,new-comers,
etc. We are always
glad to have new-comers cast their
lot with us. The year 1914 must be
the banner year for White Oak.

Rev J M Baxley of Lake City tilled
his regular appointment here at
11 a. m. Sunday, a fair congregation
being present.

went'to Kingstree Monday on
business.
