I am proud to say that Kingstree
has as many high-toned and law
abidhg citizens as any town its size
in the State. Her merchants, with
one cr two exceptions, have built
up an enviable reputation for fair
dealings and low prices toward her
country cousins. But I am afraid
that they, like the good people of
Charleston, have decided to fold
their hands and let their city government
drift to the devil. I am
not upholding any violation of law.
Far from it. I know that the legal
or illegal sale of whiskey or its
drinking to excess is wrong. But
when your city authorities hale up a
set of thoughtless and inexperienced
onnnrrv hovs. and convict, with
overwhelming evidence to the contrary,
I say, Mr Editor, it is time
for the best element of your town
to cry out, "Enough." If your
honorable Mayor and your town attorney
are so anxious to put down
the traffic of whiskey why didn't
they take action against one of your
citizens when a man of the highest
standing reported this with the witnesses
and the goods to back up his
charge? Again, if your Mayor and
attorney are so anxious to give a
dear: government, why did they allow
Policeman Epps to go around
several days before this case was
called and select men for this jurv
whom he knew by previous agreement.
would bring in a verdict of
guilty, regardless of the evidence?
' God pity the man who is wining
to agree on a verdict before hearing
the evidence. I dare Mr Epps
to deny that he did not try to sound,
as it were, several men of your
town as to how they stood in regard
to this case. I wish to state
also that one of the jurors drawn in
the first hearing, and who was loudest
in his demands for verdict of
guilty, is not only a law-breaker
himself, but one of the worst Kind,
by selling Colt's automatic pistols
to young boys of t he country. Let
him whom the cap fits wear it.
I dare him to come at me through
your columns and I will produce
the witnesses and also the pistols.

While Satan holds complete command,
Over your city's courts?"

home December 14, 1913. At the
age of 30 he came to Wilson's. S C,
in company with Mr Thomas Wilson.
Three years later he came to Greely\ille
to work with Mr W J Motts.
Here he met and married on December
21,1887, Miss Minnie Montgomery,
daughter of Mr Samuel Isaac
Montgomery.
Finding a broader field of activity
at Alcolu.he continued in the lumber
business with Mr D W Alderman un- |
til failing health required his retire- j
ment. He spent the remaining years j
of his life quietly on his farm near J
Greelyville.
For many years before his death .

church.
In business he pursued his calling
with vigor and activity. As a man
he was open-handed and generous.
His home was a place where all loved
to gather,young and old?a place of
real old Southern hospitality.
He had many friends and they
testified their love and respect by
the beautiful floral tributes around
his last resting-place.
