was very quietly spent here,
with no unusual happen :ngs, save
the gathering of a few young folk
one or two evenings to while away
the hours pleasantly "tripping the
light, fantastic toe," while some

custom of proving the best marksman
from a distance of fifty yards, J
where the bull's eye was just large
enough to be visible to the man who ,
drew the bead, the one with the keon j
eye and steadiest nerve, winning the ^
turkey. I
Miss Mamie Howard, a daughter ]
of Mr D C Howard of this place,and
Mr Gordon Taylor of Charleston
were married Saturday by Probate
Judge Brockinton. .
A "selling" is the term used by
the darkies, where one buys some i
fruit, cigars, candy and possibly
has a barbecue. They put out word .
whrreat and gather from the four j
points of the compass for a good _
time. At one of these"sellings" on *
Christmas day DeWitt Fulmore,who
is of a belligerent nature at times, .
got on the war-path and with his i
piswl shot Andrew Nesmith at close .
range. Fortunately for Andrew the .
ball struck him in the head, piercing
the tlesh, but failing to penetrate
the skull-bone, consequently
no fatal result. |j
Cadet Jack McCullough is at home
from Clemson College for the holidays
with his parents.

mar, is at home with her parents

Mr Weeks of Aiken,a brother-in-law

visiting the latter for a few days.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DANCE
Given by Kingstree Social Club
a Brilliant Aiialr.
On Monday night the young men
of the* Kingstree social club delightfully
entertained a large
number of visiting guests and the
young ladies of the town at their
annual Christmas dance in the
Thomas opera house. The large
auditorium was tastefully decorated
and brilliantly lighted, in every respect
presenting a scene typical
and appropriate to the season. The
floor was highly polished and in
excellent condition for "tripping
o' the light fantastic toe."

by the First Artillery band, the
musicians receiving numerous encores
and once in the spacious dance
hall one soon became oblivious to
the inclement weather that prevailed
outside.

About one o'clock a luncheon consisting
of turkey and ham sandwiches
and soffee was served. At
four o'clock the music ceased and
the the throng of merry makers
reluctantly dispersed.

| "A Letter from Poor Conrad."
Editor County Record:?
Please allow me a small space in
your valuable paper to express my
heartfelt thanks to the many friends
in Kingstree and other places who
have so kindly remembered me during
Christmas. The many presents
were gladly received.
I had the misfortune to be taken
sick last Sunday night with a
severe illness and suffered much for
two days and nights. On Monday
night Mr William Reddick and his
good wife came to see me. They insisted
on my coming up to their
house and staying until I got well.
I managed to get there Wednesday
in a very feeble condition. I am
much better now; am still keeping
in my room, but hope to be out
before long. Mr and Mrs Reddick
have done all possible to make me
comfortable. Mr Martin and his
estimable wife have also lent willing
hands. In time of sickness we
know our friends. I had received
several invitations to take Christmas
dinner out, but as Mr S F Epps
was first to invite me, I went to his
house. It was next door to Mr
Reddick's and, sick as I was, I could
not keep from going. I did not go
for the dinner, which was a nice
one, good enough for a king, and
served by faithful and willing hands.
I remained in that good company
for several hours and tried to seem
as not feeling bad. Sammy Epps is
a wVinWunrilpd and honorable man
and his daughters are such nice
little ladies. Every one of them
that met me said I must be sure to
come to their house Christmas day. |
I also received some nice presents
there. Mr Willie Dennis brought
me back to Mr Reddick's.and, at this
writing, I am by a warm fire in my
room.
Mr Willie Dennis' father, mother,
sister and her three children spent j
Christmas day at Mr Epps's. One)
of their sons, Walter, is son-in-law i
to Mr Epps. I would like to say j
all the good I could of that remarkable
family,but I cannot express my
meaning as I would wish. Yes, a
very remarkably family. I say this j
because I know them all, father,:
mother, five sons and one daughter. [
During the several years I have as
sociated with those people l have
never heard a harsh word of one
to the other or anyone else. They
do not use profane v language or
vulgar expressions, do not drink,}
come up to all their agreements'
promptly, their word is their bond ;
and ask no favors. What an ex- j
ample to look up to. Would that
all of our men had such qualities, j
We must live with people to know;
and to find them out. A man does ,
not know his wife until he has lived
with her a while.
I am still feeling poorly and will I
not write much. I wish again to
thank all who so kindly remembered i
me and hope they may all see many
more happy Christmas days. I was j
