Miss Sue Shaw, of the high school faculty, is spending the week in Charleston with her sister. Miss Geneva King and Mr Fercy Hutson of Kingstree were guests of Mrs W T Moody Sunday last. Mr Leo Carter of Leo passed through here last Monday, returning from a business trip. Mrs P H Arrowsmith and her mother, Mrs L P Arrowsmith, spent several days at Kingstree last week. Mr and Mrs Davis Powers of Charleston enjoyed the Christmas holidays with Mrs Powers' mother at this place. Mr and Mrs J E Stokes spent the Christmas holidays at Winnsboro with Dr and Mrs W S Stokes. Miss Ada Walker, of the graded school faculty, left several days ago' for Leesburg, Fla, where she will be the guest of her sister. The other mpmhprs of the graded and high school faculty returned to their homes to enjoy the holiday season: Prof T Cook Covington went to Bennettsville with his sister; Miss Bertha Morris and her father, Mr J J Morris, spent the week with the latter's son, Rev S C Morris, at Ninety-six. Rev E Poe Easterling and family and Miss Emily Askins are visiting relatives at Bennettsville. Capt Carter, who is well remembered here as the genial and "fat" tobacco auctioneer for Col 0 T Hall's warehouse, is spending a while in town with friends. Mr and Mrs W P Hawkins, who for the past year and a half have been the popular proprietors of the "Halcyon," are moving today to Marion. Mr and Mrs Hawkins have made many friends here, who, with the traveling public who have patronized them, will regret exceedingly their departure. Mr Covington of Clio will take charge of the "Halcyon" on January 1, 1914. Mr and Mrs A Sydney Sutcliffe of New Jersey are guests of Mr and i Mrs J M Truluck and Mr Sutcliffe's mother at this place. An enjoyable evening was spent with the hospitable hostess, who entertained in her usual charming and gracious manner. A number of the "younger set" entertained at the home of Mrs W L Askins last Saturday evening in honor of her sister, Miss Nell Beavers, with a surprise party. Miss Annie Laurie Ccckfield, who; is teaching near Timmonsville, returned Sunday afternoon to her duties. a ntro xr 1 Ufc v^III latiuaa scoauu i^nucu anaj rather quietly with the rainy weath- j er. despite the fact that it was ushered in with considerable excitement on account of the "sporting" ele-i ment's disregard for the law forbid-! ding the use of fireworks in town. Save for the few arrests from this disorder, nothing serious happened to mar the pleasure of the quiet stay-at-home happiness which was in evidence on every hand. "Mona Lisa,"Leonardo Da Vinci's great painting which was stolen from the Louvre in Paris in August, 1911. has been recovered. The fa mous painting was stolen by Vincenzo Perrugia, an Italian,in a spirit of revenge for the plundering of Italy's art galleries and museums by , Napoleon Bonaparte and the French soldiers under him. The painting , will be returned to the Louvre, although it is said to be scratched slightly on the cheek and shoulder by rough handling. The value of the "Mona Lisa" has been estimated at a half million dollars and even higher. . Aiken Daniel Berry, colored, has been lodged in jail at Aiken charged with killing a white man by the 1 name of Minus McElmurray.
