BAPTISTS A GREAT PEOPLE.
Some of the Things Done at the
Convention in Bennettsville.
Abbeville. December 17:?The
State Convention of the Baptists was
held in Bennettsville last week. The
various boards made excellent reports,
indicating the substantial
growth of the denomination in this
State.
, The secretary's statistical report
showed that there are nearly one
hundred and fifty thousand white
Baptist church members in South
Carolina.
During the year, the Baptists contributed
$50,000 to foreign missions;
$40,000 to home missions; $42,000
to State missions; $30,000 to orphanage
work; $9,000 for aged ministers;
besides the cost of maintaining
the 1,000 local ehurches, a vast
amount ior Duimmg jjc?
worship, and the like.
Fifty-five thousand dollars was
given to Greenville Female college;
$40,000 to Anderson college; $15,000
to Furman University; $66,000 to
Coker college; and smaller amounts
to Orangeburg college, and the fiv?
high schools of the convention during
1913.
The convention heartily re-endorsed
the proposed Baptist hospital,
which is to be located in Columbia,
and authorized the trustees to go
ahead, ard establish the institution.
Thirty thousand dollars is already in
hand for the purpose, and there is
much more promised.
The convention asked the churches
for $25,000 cash for Greenville Female
college by January 1; for >75,000
for Furman university by July
31: for $2,000 for the theological
seminary during: next year: $15,000
for the education board: $10,000 for
ministerial education in Furman;
$150,000 for missions; $30,000 for
orphanage; $10,000 for aged ministers
and appropriate amounts for
other religious objects.
A gift of a $10,000 house "for aged
ministers was received from C C
Brown, the house being located in
Beaufort, overlooking the sea. It is
expected that ministers temporarily
resting will also make their home
there.
The Baptist convention employs
nearly 150 missionaries, men and
women, in South Carolina; there are
more than 1,000 churches, and about
900 preachers.
The convention next year will
meet in Charleston.

How to Bankrupt tbe Doctors.
A prominent New York physician
says, "If it were not for the thin
stockings and thin soled shoes worn
by women the doctors would probably
be bankrupt." When you contract
a cold do not wait for it to
develop into pneumonia but treat it
at once. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
is intended especially for coughs
and colds, and has won a wide reputation
by its cures of these diseases.
It is most effectual and is pleasant

Wynken, BIynken and Nod.
WTynken,BIynken and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe?
Sailed on a river of crystal light
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do
you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring
fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we,"
Said Wynken,
BIynken
And Nod
The old moon laughed and sang a
song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe;
And the wind that sped them all
night long
Ruffled the waves of dew;
The little stars were the herring-fish
That live in the beautiful sea.
"Now cast your nets wherever you j
wish ?
Never afeard are we!"
So cried the stars to the fishermen
three.
Wynken,
Blynken
And Nod.
All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling
foam?
Then down from the skies cam<. .he
wooden shoe,
Bringing the fishermen home.
'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed
As if it could not be;
And some folk thought 'twas a dream
they'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea;
But I shall name you the fishermen
three:
Wynken,
Blynken
And Nod.
Wynken and Blynken are two little
eyes.
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the
skies
Is a wee one's trundle-bed;
So shut your eyes while Mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beauciful things
As you rock on the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the
fishermen three?
Wynken,
Blynken
And Nod.

Good Philosophy.
Liberality never killed a town.
Every public enterprise ought to
receive substantial encouragement.
When you give a dollar towards improving
the town, you do not throw
away your money, but simply make
a good investment.
XXX
If a man starts to pay his debts,
it puts a raw of men a half mile
long in motion, each one starting to
pay his. It may be that you are
the man in the row that has stopped
the motion. If you owe any one,
pay him.
XXX
Gift giving at Christmas time is,
or ought to be, nothing more than
a manifestation of the Christmas
spirit, which is unselfish, seeking only
to make others happy. Every one
who has been moved by this spirit
has realized the truth of the saying.
"It is more blessed to give than to
receive.'' ?Mullins Enterprise.

The Ladies' Missionary society of

hall at Salters Depot on the night of
