We were pleased to exchange
greetings with our friend, Mr H J
Burgess of Bethel, Thursday of last

Mr S M Haynesworth, a prominent
business man of Foreston, was
exchanging greetings with his friends
in town Tuesday.
Re v W E Hurt, who is attending
the Baptist State Convention at Bennettsville
this week, is the guest of
Mr and Mrs R W Crosland.
Rev W Smith Martin of Branchville
was in town the early part of
the week. His many friends were
delighted to meet this good man
again.
The biggest payment on subscription
we have received this year was
five dollars paid by a colored subscriber.
Seems sort of strange, but
it's the truth.

Kingstree is to have a brass band.
MrWT Thompson has Organized i
the band with seventeen members.
The instruments arrived last night
and the welkin will soon ring when
boys commence practicing.
Mr John A Dukes of Kingstree
spent last Friday in St George with J
relatives and friends. We are glad |
to know that "Jack" is making
good in his new home. Kingstree |
is a hustling town and he says he

Georgetown, leaving in its wake little
else than dirt, debris and disappointment.
The same carnival was
here several years ago and, in our
opinion, was a much better show.
Dr Luther A Riser has been \isiting
the family of his sister, Mrs
LeRoy Lee. Dr Riser is in the service
of the State Board of Health,
looking after the cause and prevention
of hook-worm in the State. At
the present time his efforts are directed
to Florence county.
Mr J F Littlejohn of Gaffney is
here temporarily in charge of the
Kingstree Telephone company. Mr
Jno W Wilkins of Gaffney has been
chosen as manager of the company, j
vice Mr B E Clarkson. resigned, but j
Mr Wilkins was taken suddenly sick
and has been unable to report for
duty.
Mr Stickney of Charleston.
who has been visiting his niece, Mrs
P S McChesney. made an interesting
address to the Sunday-school of the
Episcopal church Sunday. This was
Mr Stickney's first visit to Kingstree
in twelve years and he was
much impressed with the many improvements
made here.
Rev R L Holroyd, for two years
pre iding elder of Kingstree district,
left with his family today for Rock
Hill, where he was appointed presid-1
ing elder at the recent session of j
toe Methodist Conference. It is with
great regret that we part with these
good people, who carry with them
to their new home the best wishes
of all.

The "Japanese Fair" given at the j
Gourdin building Friday afternoon 1
for the benefit of the school,was enjoyed
by many who participated.
The proceeds will go toward the installation
of electric fixtures in the
school auditorium. The lights are
an urgent necessity and we hope
that the school management will soon
be able to have them put in.
Rev H B Browne, the new presiding
elder of the Kingstree district
of the M E church, South, arrived
in town this morning with his wife,
and will at once enter upon the duties
of his office. Mr Browne has
been for the past four years pastor of
the Littleton street Methodist church
of Camden. Previously to that time
he was for a number of years a presiding
elder and is said to have been
one of the best the Conference has
ever had. Mr Browne will preach
in the Methodist church at King
scree next Sunday morning and
evening, where a hearty weJcome
awaits him. We also welcome him
and his good wife to our town and
trust that their stay with us may be j
both pleasant and profitable.
