McLAURIN ANO SAWYER
> . FROZEN OUTl
AT THE BLEASE POWWOW IN
COLUMBIA FAIR WEEK-SIDELIGHTS
ON THE SITUATION.
* Columbia, October 31:?Remember
the story in Esop of the satyr
who finding a traveler freezing and
blowing his fingers, took him in and
gave him hot soup, which the travel-1
er promptly blew upon? "Why did
you blow your fingers?" asked the
satyr? "To warm them," said the
traveler. "And why did you blow
the soup?" "To cool it," said the
traveler. "Then get you gone,"

man who blows hot and cold with
the same breath."
That is the way it was with the
Bleaseite pow-wow in this city Wednesday
night at the Hotel Jefferson?the
swellest feed joint in this
town. An onlooker in Venice
wouldn't have imagined that the
sleek and perfectly groomed attendant
upon the feast, as they dallied
with the walnuts and the wine
amidst sparkling cut glass and shining
silver and egg-shell Sevres
china, were wool-hat, one-gallus boys,
representatives of "the Pee-pul,"
rr% fft
wnose omces iney were nauicm ?*,
apportion among themselves and
their friends. One could imagine
the gathering wiggling a collective
finger against a collective nose at the
very idea of the gullibility of the
aforesaid "Pee-pul."
But the gathering blew cold and
blew hot with the same breath. The
breath was so cold that it froze the
marrow in the bones of the McLaurin
candidacy for the Blease
mantle; froze the marrow so hard
that the candidacy broke all to pieces
too small to be swept up. McLaurin
has quit, dead, in disgust. And it
takes a lot in politics to disgust
"Curley-Headed Johnny!" If Bleaseism
is rank enough to turn his
stomach?well.
Nor was McLaurin the only one to
get the icy blast. There were lots
romsntivp candidates
%J1 ca^ci ouu ?vwKv..
a-huntin' and a-fishin' around immodestly
for "Coley's" official boots
ar.d breeches. One of them was
Sawyer, of Georgetown, who was
the chief hot-air artist of the even-1
ing. True as gospel, Sawyer came
here with a gubernatorial bee in his!
militant shako. He's a tighten,
Sawyer is. He admits it himself.
He said it in his speech. He wants
blood; buckets of political blood. He
doesn't want peace and harmony.
To hell with peace and harmony, he
said in effect. His idea is that there
can be no peace except a desolation |
of those who oppose his peculiar)
politics, which he impressed upon
the gathering was of the Blease
brand?the brand being blown in
the bottle and thus permanent.
Sawyer said he was going so keep
up his fight in Georgetown until all
of his enemies had been eliminated.
~ - ?>
his fight; nis enemies?see. rui
confirmation of this assertion, see
Caldwell's report in the News and
Courier; and Caldwell is one of the
most conservative correspondents in
the newspaper business.
But Sawyer's ambition, despite
his own hot blast of fighting talk,
received the icy mitt. It wasn't
even one of ihe "also rans." It
wasn't mentioned above a whisper,
if even that much.
The present favorite in the running
under the Blease colors, Sirnms
of Barnwell, is said to be a man who
will out-Blease the Governor if he
gets a chance. McLaurin says Ihe
campaign is going to be one of
"class hate and prejudice." Simms,
they say, is a man for that sort of
contest. ? Georgetown Times.

HEALTHY LIVER <
MAKES BEAUTY.;
Famous Actress finds that a Healthy .
Liver is Necessary to Gook Looks
and Youthfuiness.
One of the best known women of
the American stage is writing a
series of articles on the preservation
of beauty. She attaches g.eat importance
to keeping the liver active
at all times, and she is right. Neither
srood looks nor happiness will stay
long with aDy man or woman who
lets the liver get lazy and sluggish.
It is not always safe to take calomel,
the old liver remedy. Doctors
agree that it is a very uncertain
drug. But Dr W V Brockington's
drug store has a remedy for sale
that they guarantee to take the
place of calomel absolutely, and still
be harmless, causing no restriction
of habit or diet. This remedy is
Dodson's Liver Tone.
Dodson's Liver Tone is a pleasanttasting
vegetable liquid, but it starts1
the liver gently and surely and relieves
constipation and biliousness so
promptly that it has become a dependable
remedy in thousands of
homes in the United States. There
are scores of families in this vicinity
who will not be without it in the
house and who would not think of
starting on a trip without a bottle
of it.
Dr BfPckington has sold so much
Dodson's Liver Tone that he is convinced
of its merit and will give any
person his 50 cents back who buys a
bottle and does not find that it takes
the place of calomel to perfection.
A contemporary concedes that tjie
world may be growing better, but it
insists that there are too many 3-cent
men riding around in $3,000 autos.
