? --Account of Initial Meeting.
Tjiirp City. October 28: ? Lake
City High school has organized a
literary society under the name of
the Alpha Literary society. A constitution
has been drawn up and officers
elected,with Miss Annie Davis
as president. Meetings will be held
Friday every two weeks, at which a
debate between such members of the
society as the executive committee
may see fit to appoint will take
place on a carefully selected subject.

As a concrete example of the perfection
of soil, climate and resources
with which this section of the State
is so richly endowed we know of
no place more apropos than the new
town of Hemingway, in the lower
part of Williamsburg county, on the
Seaboard Extension railroad. Long
since recognized as a banner agricultural
section, the railroad tapping
it, like Mose^ smiting the rock,
has caused to gush forth from its
golden treasury a swift-flowing
stream of success and prosperity.
"Hustling Hemingway," alluringly
alliterative, aptly describes an
ideal community, splendid in* resources,
peopled with red-blooded
men and women who know the
value of their heritage and who are
ambitiously striving to build in the
form of a town a fitting superstructure
upon the magnificent foundation
already laid out for them.
Here we have a community hardly
more than two years old that has
doubled its population within the

Train Kills Negro?Fair Vial torsMr
Dnrant's Lecture-Personal.
Lake City, October 30:?Saturday
morning, while attempting to
cross the railroad trestle between
Scranton and Lake City, just beyond
the town limits, Jim Bean, an old
negro man, was struck and instantly
killed by fast train No 83 going
south. From the evidence brought
out at the inquest it appeared that
the train crew saw this old man on
the track for a distance of a half
mile and knew positively that he
was about mid-way of the trestle
when the train was still over two
hundred yards away. Consequently
the jury rendered a verdict of
"death by negligent operation of
of the train, No 83, a train owned
and operated by the Atlantic Coast
Line Railroad company."
