SMITH'S SKETCHES.
Cotton Prices ;Beat New 1 ?*-k?
New School House.
Smith,October 13:?The health of
our community is generally good.
Our local Duyers, Messrs Nesmith
and Smiley, appear to be doing a
"land office" business, ginning and
buying the "fleecy staple" This pen
pusher is informed that these gentlemen
are giving more than is paid
for the same grades in New York
or Liverpool. Long may they prosper.
I think the school trustees of this
district have merited much praise
for the pretty, up-to-date schoolhouse
they have just completed on
Mr Nesmith's place. It speaks well
for the thrift and prosperity of the
district and reminds ye scribe that
things have changed since he graduated
in a little log school-house
when he had mastered the blue-back
speller and Smiley's arithmetic.
Our teacher was named Tallent,
which I thought a venerable and appropriate
name for a professor.
Peace to his ashes.
I have just been thinking what a
good world this is, and what a glorious
place South Carolina is to live
in oanoniAllv Willi&mshurff eountv.
Most of our farmers have been
wearing an over-grown smile all the
fall, but when the storm came last
week and the rain descended, some
took the blues and that smile collapsed.
Some of our people
were up with their cotton and had
their hay harvested, while others
were caught with most of their crop
in the, field, and many with their
grHss mowed and lying on the
ground, which is of course a total
loss. This writer thinks the present
crop an average one.but good farmers
tell me not so.
A friend tells me "Casey Jones"
sent his force of hands to Marlboro
county, as they could find no cotton
here where they could pick more
than 40 pounds a day. Over there
they could pick 240, the cotton was
so good and corn was immense.
Whpn the train passed across one
field the passengers inquired what
tunnel that whs they had just come
through. That is what our friend
told us.
Hoping that the bad weather is
over, and wishing The Record and
farmers all prosperity, I remain, as
ever, Your obedient servant,
Peniel Bill.

News Notes of Local and Personal
Interest.
Scranton, October 14:?Mr S J
Kirby, who has been quite sick, is
improving, we are glad to report.
Dr W S Lynch and family are attending
the meeting of the A C L
Surgeons' association at Birmingham,
Ala, this week.
Rev J W Truluck and son went to
Charleston Sunday, returning this
morning.
Dr C H Pate will go to Olanta
this afternoon on business.
Although rain kept many from
attending, a good-sized crowd at
tended the performance of Dana
Walden, the magician and entertainer,
Thursday night, October 9.
The occasion was a success and all
were highly pleased. The next
number will be presented October
29, the Alkahest Artists of Atlanta?
three ladies.
While in Lake City Saturday afternoon
Mr Hinnant Matthews had
his mule, which was hitched in one
the hitching lots, stolen, or, it broke
ir>noo onH strnvpri off: loose mules
generally stray home, however.
With all the searching the mule cannot
be found, or had not been up to
Monday afternoon. IMG.
