A VISIT TO INDIANTOWN.
Hon JamesNorton Descants Upon
I ^Charms of Place and People.
In company with Rev VV A
Beckham the writer took the 12:15
southbound train of the North and
South Carolina, railroad from Mullins
Thursday last for the Indiantown
community, in Williamsburg
county. Near 4 o'clock p. m. we
reached Nesmith, a station on the
Georgetown & Western, where we
were met by Col David McCutchen.
Soon,in his carriage, we were speed
ily driven to the home of the Colonel.
After meeting the most excellent
^ family, Mr McCutchen took Mr
^0 'eckham out a mile or more to the
Cottry creek lake for a fish,a shot
'squirrel and a duck. He shot
SB iuirrel and hit its little toe.
-k floated about on the water,

At 10 a. m. Rev Dr Wardlaw
on the call of the chairman, Mr McCutchen,
opened the exercises with
prayer. Mr McCutchen in a verypleasant
manner introduced the l
writer who for possibly 45 minutes i
talked on "Co-operation and Co- ,
ordination" in all the matters of
education.
Rev Mr Beckham followed in
a splendid presentation of the gen- 1
eral needs of education and the i
duties of parents in this all-import- ,
ant work. Supt Lew's, of the school,
followed in a brief outline of the
work expected and to be done. '
County Superintendent of Educa- 1
tmn Srvo'ornpr made a short talk i
with an explanation of the
workings of a demonstration
farm of three acres of land
which, in connection with that
school, is to be an experimental
work under the direction of the
National Department ofAgriculture,
aided by Clemson College. Indiantown
will have the best rural school
in South Carolina. The plan, success
and management of the
school are the results of the sufervision
of the board of trustees,
especially its chairman, Mr David
McCutchen. They are live, working
trustees, not a dead happy-go-lucky
body of men who give practically
{no attention to schools of the disj
trict or education in general. Mrs
I Col David McCutchen, a daughter
, of Dr Cunpinghata of Williamsburg
j county, and a niece of Rev J C
Chandler, of the->S C Conference, is
a princess as wife, mother and I
entertainer. 1
Mr Lester Lewis, of Horry county, ,
is superintendent of this school, who ,
is aided by Misses Brown of Mars'
Bluff,Blalock of Edgefield,Salters of
Williamsburg and Plowden of Clarendon.
If first-class results do not
follow the work of this school team
we shall feel constrained to write,
"long and full?disappointed."?

urselves to stand so deluded by
illacy? We know that it takes anyhere
from $1,000 to $5,000 per
tile to build our roads properly
ven when the material can be had
t or near its side, and considerably
tore when not, which would figure
140,000 needed for this purpose
lone; and yet we have men who
Km very interested in their roads
nat look me in the eye and say: "I
ay my tax.now give me my road."
>h, my! if these people would con- !
ider how small this road tax is as

rould be some hope of our Legisla- (

bis lack of thoughtfulnesson the part
f citizens who, when they vote next ,
