THURSPAY7OCT. 2. 1913 Grand Jury Presentment. To the Hon T S Sease, Presiding Judge at the fall term of the court of sessions for Williamsburg county: We thank you for your kind, courteous treatment and plain explanation of the law to us. We, the grand jurors, beg to j make our final presentment for the I year. We have tried to perform I our duties faithfully and without! fear or favoritism. We are pleased to report that our special committee appointed to examine the books of: the various county officers find them in excellent condition and correct in every particular,as far as they could see. At the last term of court we recommended that the board of County Commissioners and the Sheriff make an investigation as to the cost of building two additional steel cells in our jail. That committee has reported that it will cost ben enn *9 nnn tr* hm'M tYVCUU <pA)WV nuu yw)vvv vv mwhu these cells. After discussing with the Sheriff as to the present system of water and sewer works now in the jail, it is anything but satisfactory as it now stands. We therefore recommend that the present system be done away with and the jail be connected with the city water works both for water and sewerage, and that this work be done at once or as early as possible. We further recommend that the above referred to cells be put in within the next twelve months, the j cells and the water works both not to exceed the cost of two thousand dollars. After conferring with our county officers we find that some of the offices are being over-stocked with old records to such an extent that an extra building is needed for the storing of these old records. We recommend that our county officers have built a fire proof building at a cost not to exceed $60(>, and we further recommend that a little house tr? hp hspH as a smoke house be built' in the jail yard, the cost of which is not to exceed $30. There has been considerable complaint to us of grievances by the voters of the Hebron section as to | the way they were treated at the recent election for snd against intoxicating liquors. We recommend that this be investigated and reported on at the next term of court. We, the grand jurors, could not pass without complimenting those in charge of our court green as we find it neatly kept and in a condition to be proud of. We regret to find that we have a j few murder cases at this term of couri but we feel that crime is on the decrease and pray that our citizens, both white and black, will do all they can to suppress crime. The millinery opening here on Tuesday and Wednesday by Messrs S Marcus and J S Eron, the Kingstree Dry Goods Co and the Kennedy Millinery Company marked + nlaooont oc \i oil QC ailUlllCl [MtOCttm C40 CAW, cv^wwww ful event in the business history of these firms. From an artistic point of view the displays were elaborate and beautiful beyond description. The predominating shapes in hats are much smaller than those of last season. The colors are varied while the leading materials are of plush, velvet and felt. Trimmings are not so gorgeous as were in vogue a year ago,as there is a scarcity of artificial fiowers and foliage. These are supplanted by parti-colored ribbons and plumage, frequently set off by the api>eaiance of a butterfly or small bird, wjiich in many cases looks as if the ornament were alive and had just alighted on the hat in its passing flight. The display of dress goods, embroideries and laces is especially pretty and attractive and many new materials and designs are to be seen. The display of coats and coat suits for ladies is what would seem to us the f-erfection of the tailor's skill. In coat suits the coats are rather Ion# behind ana are somewhat similar to the old "swallowtail" or "cut-away" worn by the opposite sex some fifteen or twenty years ago, with the addition of a profusion of buttons and brocaded work for ornamentation. The skirts are of the common-sense length and width to our masculine eye and we can find no fault whatever with the modest little side slits at the ankle. We are sure that the ladies of Kingstree and the community will be able to find just what Dame Fashion dictates that they should wear mis winter in me iyiukbucc shops. Try it. and see! The prices, too. are reasonable. A lard. Dear Friends and Citizens of Williamsburg County: I will write a few lines to The County Record in reference to my case held in the fall term of court. 1 feel that the way my friends stood by me that I could not let it go and not say anything about it. Mr friend, Mr ID Gordon Baker, was my attorney from Florence. He having to make connection with the train, was not able to get into court until the case was about half over. However, when Judge bease saia that he would not wait on my attorney, I am very glad to say that my friend, Lawyer Edwin L Hirsch, although unprepared to enter into the case, apparently without any fear of the other side, took charge of the case. I have had a great number of people to tell me that they never saw a case conducted so well before in their lives. He plead earnestly. He was with me at two o'clock in the morning when the jurors had not decided on the case. They went into the room on Monday about 4 o'clock and stayed in until Tuesday about 10 o'clock. I was very much troubled: my wife and myself did not sleep very much that night. Mr Hirsch called my wife over the 'phone the next morning, saying. "Don't fear, I will be with you and do you all of the good that 1 can,'" and he did. When I got down to the court house the next morning he was still there with his whole heart in the case, and after the jury came out and said that I was not guilty I went to Mr Hirsch's office to settle with him. I asked him what I owed him and with all the kindness that he could speak of he said: "Send Mr Baker his check and thank him for what he has done." And then I said, "What do I owe you?" and with kindness he said to me: My friend, you do not owe me anything. I am glad that I can do you a favor. You haven't got any money that I would have." God bless Mr Hirsch! I can never hope to be able to do him just such a favor as this, but when we say our evening prayers we will ask our Father in heaven to bless him and we believe that He will.
