Usually a lot 1 of general platitudes,fulsome thanks a and meaningless nothings is aboutas F A. high as the general presentments of 1 grand juries ever rise to. For a s grand jury to stand up for the rights a ?... * s of the best citizens against tne xaii- ure of court officials and "the Hon-! | orable Judges", marks a new era in South Carolina's administration of! ? c justice. This was what a Barnwell & grand jury did a few weeks ago,and v it could well be repeated in many ! ^ counties of the State. Conditions in ^ many counties have grown intolera- i ^ ble.and there is no doubt that such a 3 presentment as given below would j( go a long way toward rectifying j such a deplorable state of things. The lawyer still gets up with b his excuse,flimsy or otherwise as the J ? case may be. and so far as laymen! . * 1.1 ? ! f see, tne genuineness ui me excuse is seldom looked into, and no matter how heinous the crime, the case is continued from court to court until the witnesses are scattered, some even dying from old age, and when at last the trial comes the criminal gets off entirely and the people suf fer.
